Cylinder attachments

Figure 10-2 shows a high-speed compressor frame and cylinders. The upper compressor is called a two throw machine because it has two cylinders attached to the frame and running off the crank shaft. The lower compressor is a four-throw machine because it has four cylinders attached to the frame. The number of throws refers to the number of pistons. [Pg.256]

An actuating cylinder is a device that converts fluid power into linear, or straight-line, force and motion. Since linear motion is back-and-forth motion along a straight line, this type of actuator is sometimes referred to as a reciprocating, or linear motor. The cylinder consists of a ram, or piston, operating within a cylindrical bore. Actuating cylinders may be installed so that the cylinder is anchored to a stationary stmcture and the ram or piston is attached to the mechanism to be operated, or the piston can be anchored and the cylinder attached to the movable mechanism. [Pg.608]

Cascade System Several air cylinders attached in series to fill SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) bottles. [Pg.300]

Flare Signal Rocket Mk 1 Flare consisted of cardboard cylinder attached to a stick, to the end of which was fixed a 614 ft length of rope. [Pg.472]

An air damper (also known as a dashpot) is mounted near the end of the beam opposite the pan. This device consists of a piston that moves within a concentric cylinder attached to the balance case. Air in the cylinder undergoes expansion and contraction as the beam is set in motion the beam rapidly comes to rest as a result of this opposition to motion. [Pg.27]

The effective area and geometric configuration for the heat transfer through the insulation correspond to two hollow concentric cylinders attached to hemispherical ends. The advantage of this type of configuration is that isotherms are smooth and continuous throughout the insulation sample and thus aid in the interpretation of data where conduction and radiation modes of heat transfer are sought independently. [Pg.65]

In domestic hot water (DHW) systems the most popular model now is a close-coupled indirect system. The collector fluid is an aqueous glycol solution, with corrosion inhibitor added, which circulates through a heat exchanger jacket, surrounding the horizontal cylinder attached to the top of the collector. This system allows the use of ordinary steel sheet for the collector thus, it is much less expensive than copper or stainless steel collectors. [Pg.225]

Figure 1 is a front view of the completed apparatus and shows a gas cylinder attached. The apparatusisessentially self-contained, and requires only a 110-volt ac power source, a source of cooling water, a supply of liquid helium and an external wet-test meter. The apparatus incorporates vacuum equipment, two Pirani gauges for measuring vacuum, two coil-and-trap assemblies to contain the impurities and a fixed orifice for controlling flow in the apparatus. Stainless steel tubing is used wherever possible and all stainless steel connections are silver-brazed. The apparatus is assembled in a relay-rack cabinet with overall dimensions of 17 X 22 X 67 in. [Pg.400]

A cylinder attached to a harness and carried on the wearer s back provides air or oxygen to a special mask. This equipment is commonly used for rescue purposes. [Pg.398]

In an unpublished research made about 1781 on the strength of gaseous explosions, Cavendish fired the mixture by an electric spark in a brass cylinder attached to a lever. A hole in the bottom of the cylinder was closed loosely by a fixed peg. The height which the suitably weighted cylinder rose was measured. There... [Pg.175]

Rotating methods use stoppered graduated cylinders attached to the axle of a motor, allowing the surfactant solution to be agitated/rotated a adjustable number of rotations per minute and the foam volume to be easily measured visually [12]. Schmolka [13] developed an apparatus in which the cylinder containing the surfactant solution rotates in a vertical plane at a controlled speed he reported comparative foam data for various surfactants as well as various commercial products like shampoo, toothpaste, or foam bath. [Pg.424]

Subjects trained to identify reproductive odors need not be conspecifics. Rats were trained to detect the estrus-specific odor in cow urine (Dehnhard Claus 1988). The olfactory discrimination apparatus consisted of a teflon cylinder attached to a test-chamber. Air flow (18 L/h) was guided through gas-washing bottles containing urine samples and then into a Teflon test chamber with the rat. Rats were rewarded for responding in the presence of estrous but not diestrous urine. Once trained these rats were used to differentiate among fractions that contained chemical constituents specific to estrus urine. [Pg.351]
