Introduction and commercial application Safety and the environment have become important elements of all parts of the field life cycle, and involve all of the technical and support functions in an oil company. The Piper Alpha disaster in the North Sea in 1988 has resulted in a major change in the approach to management of safety of world-wide oil and gas exploration and production activities. Companies recognise that good safety and environmental management make economic sense and are essential to guaranteeing long term presence in the industry.

When exclusively considering Lewis-add catalysis, the literature on ligand effects can be divided into studies describing quantitatively the effect of ligands on rates and equilibria of the individual steps in the catalytic cycle on one hand, and studies focused on the enantioselectivity of the reaction on the other. Interestingly, in the majority of the former investigations, aqueous media are employed. 

Most modem coke ovens operate on a regenerative heating cycle in order to obtain as much surplus gas as possible for use on the works, or for sale. If coke-oven gas is used for heating the ovens, the majority of the gas is surplus to requirements. If producer gas is used for heating, much of the coke-oven gas is surplus. 

A majority of the fasteners used in automobiles in the United States are coated with microcapsules loaded with an adhesive. When the fastener is installed, a fraction of the capsules in the coating mpture releasing the adhesive payload. The adhesive essentially glues the fasteners in place preventing them from becoming loose and causing rattles. The capsules are designed so that only a fraction of them break each time a fastener is taken off and put back. The on/off cycle can be repeated three or four times. 

Before a 1/1 /70 FDA ban (rescission proposed in early 1990), cyclamate noncaloric sweeteners were the major derivatives driving cycloliexylamine production. The cyclohexylsulfamic acid sodium salt (39) [139-05-9J and mote thermally stable calcium cyclohexylsulfamic acid (40) [139-06-1] salts were prepared from high purity cyclohexylamine by, among other routes, a reaction cycle with sulfamic acid. 

Power plants based on the Rankine thermodynamic cycle have served the majority of the world s electric power generation needs in the twentieth century. The most common heat sources employed by Rankine cycle power plants are either fossil fuel-fired or nuclear steam generators. The former are the most widely used. 

Other agents are also used for the treatment of manic-depressive disorders based on preliminary clinical results (177). The antiepileptic carbamazepine [298-46-4] has been reported in some clinical studies to be therapeutically beneficial in mild-to-moderate manic depression. Carbamazepine treatment is used especially in bipolar patients intolerant to lithium or nonresponders. A majority of Hthium-resistant, rapidly cycling manic-depressive patients were reported in one study to improve on carbamazepine (178). Carbamazepine blocks noradrenaline reuptake and inhibits noradrenaline exocytosis. The main adverse events are those found commonly with antiepileptics, ie, vigilance problems, nystagmus, ataxia, and anemia, in addition to nausea, diarrhea, or constipation. Carbamazepine can be used in combination with lithium. Several clinical studies report that the calcium channel blocker verapamil [52-53-9] registered for angina pectoris and supraventricular arrhythmias, may also be effective in the treatment of acute mania. Its use as a mood stabilizer may be unrelated to its calcium-blocking properties. Verapamil also decreases the activity of several neurotransmitters. Severe manic depression is often treated with antipsychotics or benzodiazepine anxiolytics. 

Malaria. Malaria infection occurs in over 30% of the world s population and almost exclusively in developing countries. Approximately 150 X 10 cases occur each year, with one million deaths occurring in African children (87). The majority of the disease in humans is caused by four different species of the malarial parasite. Vaccine development is problematic for several reasons. First, the parasites have a complex life cycle. They are spread by insect vectors and go through different stages and forms (intercellular and extracellular sexual and asexual) as they grow in the blood and tissues (primarily fiver) of their human hosts. In addition, malaria is difficult to grow in large quantities outside the natural host (88). Despite these difficulties, vaccine development has been pursued for many years. An overview of the state of the art is available (89). 

The efficiency of the weathering of rocks in using carbonic acid produced in the carbon cycle is affected by various hydrologic, environmental, and cultural controls. The fact that the principal anion in fresh surface water worldwide almost always is bicarbonate attests to the overriding importance of this process. Exceptions are systems in which evaporite minerals are available for dissolution by groundwater or where human activities are major sources of sulfate or chloride inflow.
