In the second case, the dying off of cuttings begins with an intense chlorosis after the third day in the propagator. Within 10 days all the affected cuttings die out. Rotting of the base of the stem is believed to be due to nematodes and bacteria frequently associated with this condition. 

Whilst all aspects of a laboratory s operation require systematic control, it is the calibration of test equipment which gives rise to most problems and which is also the most expensive. All test equipment and every parameter of each instrument requires formal calibration. For example, it is not good enough to calibrate the force scale of a tensile machine, there are also requirements for speed of traverse, etc. plus associated cutting dies and dial gauges. 

When processing plastics some type of tooling is usually required. Tools include molds, dies, mandrels, jigs, fixtures, punch dies, perforated forms, etc. The terms for tools are virtually synonymous in the sense that they have some type of female and/or negative cavity into or through which a molten plastic moves usually under heat and pressure or they are used in secondary operations such as cutting dies, stamping sheet dies, etc. These tools fabricate or shape products. In this chapter injection molds and extrusion dies are primarily reviewed because they represent over 95% of all tools made for the plastic industry. This chapter also includes information applicable to other molds and dies used in the other processes some of the other chapters too provide information applicable to their tools.

Undoubtedly the mo.st expensive item in any system of laboratory eontrol is the calibration of equipment. All test equipment should be calibrated, and every parameter relating to that machine requires formal calibration. For example, it is easy to see that the force scale and speed of traverse of a ten.sile machine need calibrating, but it is less obvious that the cutting dies for test pieces also need calibrating in order to ensure that the test pieces conform to specification.

Die manufacturing Cutting dies are prepared to cut several layers of material to make the shoe. Sharp steel strips are bent around the various paper patterns to form individual dies for each part of the shoe. 

Normally tiiis will be in small volumes, although there has been an example where such a reaction occurred in a steel tube inserted in the groxmd. Hydrogen accumulated inside tiie steel tube (a small volume) and when it was cut die sparks triggered an explosion. Generation of hydrogen is also associated witii finely divided aluminium waste deposited in landfill. 

Trilayer actuators architecture have been proposed in 1996 by Baughman (1996) to allow their operation in air because die middle layer acts as an ion reservoir necessary for oxidation-reduction process. Several of diese macroactuator architectures have been realized using classical elecfrodeposition mediods of CP. This architecture has been downscaled to microsized structures for die first time in 2009 by G. Alici et al. (2009). They used die laser ablation to cut die PPy/PVDF/ PPy trilayer actuators into microbeam shapes. They were able to fabricate trilayer microactuators with a size of 850 x 250 x 170 pm using this technique. 

Specimens should not be taken from within 100 mm of either roll edge unless it is specifically requested. Specimens can be cut by hand using sharp knife blades or, especially when precise dimensions are required, by machine with the use of cutting dies.
