A new generation of antiinflammatory agents having immunosuppressive activity has been developed. The appearance of preclinical and clinical reports suggest that these are near entry to the pharmaceutical market. For example, tenidap (CP-66,248) (12) has been demonstrated to inhibit IL-1 production from human peripheral blood monocytes in culture (55). Clinically, IL-1 in synovial fluids of arthritic patients was reduced following treatment with tenidap. Patients with rheumatoid or osteoarthritis, when treated with tenidap, showed clinical improvement (57,58). In addition to its immunological effects, tenidap also has an antiinflammatory profile similar to the classical NSAIDs (59). Other synthetic inhibitors of IL-1 production are SKF 86002 (20) andE-5110 (21) (55). [Pg.40]

Water leaves the field either as surface mnoff, carrying pesticides dissolved in the water or sorbed to soil particles suspended in water, or as water draining through the soil profile, carrying dissolved pesticides to deeper depths. To ensure microbial strains are viable and pure a suite of morphological, biochemical, and cytochemical tests are used to confirm characteristics specific to their taxons. A number of commercially available rapid identification kits are also employed for some common genera. In addition to these taxon specific tests, many of the cultures are tested for their fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) profiles using the commercial MIDI system. The FAME profiles can be compared to the MIDI database for species identification/confirmation purposes. The Biolog system, which yields a metabolic fingerprint of an organism, is another alternative for rapid identification. [Pg.157]

In the dialyzed batch start-up phase and the subsequent continuous operation a substantial increase in viable cell density and monoclonal antibody (MAb) titer was observed compared to a conventional suspension culture. Fungicidal activity was determined by the disc method and zones of inhibition were recorded by measuring the diameter (mm) of the inhibition zone. Yeast cultures (S. cerevisiae) showed growth inhibition (clear area surrounding disc) by sediment extracts from all stations when compared to control discs. HPLC analysis of sediment extracts showed more than 20 components in the migration profile of each station.
