Crystallization, sugars sorbitol

In pharmaceutical applications, sorbitol is used as a tablet diluent in wet granulation or dry compression formulations. It is commonly used in chewable tablets because of its sweet taste, and it is also used as a plasticizer for gelatin in capsule formulations. Sorbitol is utilized in sugar-free liquid preparations and as a stabilizer for drug, vitamin, and antacid suspensions. When it is used in syrups, crystallization around bottle caps is prevented. [Pg.463]

Lactitol. Lactitol (4-0-/ -D-galactopyranosyl-D-sorbitol), is a synthetic sugar alcohol produced on reduction of lactose, usually using Raney nickel. It can be crystallized as a mono- or di-hydrate. Lactitol is not metabolized by higher animals it is relatively sweet and hence has potential as a non-nutritive sweetener. It is claimed that lactitol reduces the absorption of sucrose, blood and liver cholesterol levels and to be anticariogenic. It has applications in low-calorie foods (jams, marmalade, chocolate, baked goods) it is non-hygroscopic and can be used to coat moisture-sensitive foods, e.g. sweets. [Pg.60]

In liquid preparations sorbitol is used as a vehicle in sugar-free formulations and as a stabilizer for drug, vitamin, and antacid suspensions. It has also been shown to be a suitable carrier to enhance the in vitro dissolution rate of indometa-cin. In syrups it is effective in preventing crystallization around the cap of bottles. A study of the relaxational transitions and related heat capacity anomalies for galactose and fructose has been described which employs calorimetric methods. The kinetics of solution oxidation of L-ascorbic acid have been studied using an isothermal microcalorimeter. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has been used to measure solid state co-crystallization of sugar alcohols (xylitol, o-sorbitol and D-mannitol), and the thermal behaviour of anticoagulant heparins. Several thermal techniques were used to study the decomposition of p-CD inclusion complexes of ferrocene and derivatives. DSC and derivative thermogravimetric measurements have been reported for crystalline cytidine and deoxycytidine. Similar behavior was reported previously by Allen and coworkers for tablets prepared from dispersions of small saccharides like sucrose, mannitol, and sorbitol (Allen et al. 1978). The faster release phase was attributed to a molecular incorporated fraction and the slow release to a crystalline fraction of the lipophihc drug, which was present due to incomplete dissolution of the drug in the molten sugar during preparation (Allen et al. 1977). The results imply that crystallization occurred during dissolution of disaccharide solid dispersions. [Pg.491]
