Crop plants collections

In Slovakia, the crop plant germplasm collection is stored in around 18 specialized research and breeding institutes. The Research Institute of Plant Protection in Piestany, Slovakia, holds six accessions (2002 data) four advanced cultivars and a landrace from Hungary, and an advanced cultivar from the Czech Republic (IPGRI, 2006). 

When the genome of the plant harboring a candidate pathway is not sequenced and annotated, forward genetics remains a useful approach for plants with well documented collections of mutants and genetic variants such as crop plants. In other cases, a suitable shortcut to the elucidation and engineering of the pathway is usually the creation and analysis of ESTs from plant tissues treated so as to selectively induce the relevant metabolism, or from the plant tissues... 

Guayule, potentially a source of natural mbber, is an unusual crop in that it has been an article of commerce in the past. Guayule grows wild in northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. When the leaves are milled in water, a latex is released that coagulates into natural mbber worms. These can easily be collected and relatively easily refined to give a product that is almost identical to the natural mbber from southeast Asia. During World War II there were several thousand acres of guayule planted in California and a small plant estabUshed to extract the mbber for military use. After the war. 

Other suggestions on distributed processing reach beyond the capabilities of today s micro reactors, and hence are of more visionary character [5]. With rich government subsidies, pesticides were distributed through all collective farms The Soviet official policy, the chemicalisation of agriculture, was an attempt to overcome its prominent ineffectiveness in crop production.
