Craving for nicotine

The circumstance described would certainly not be one of temptation. Recalcitrant cravings for nicotine or heroin are not like internal tensions, sometimes mounting to a breaking point. The circumstances of the seriously unwilling addict seem rather more like those of the exhausted climber. The discomfort both inclines one to give up the project and leads one not (in the end) to resist the desire to do so. Unlike external obstacles (or internal pressures), motivational obstacles work in part not by defeating one s best efforts but by diverting one from effective resistance. One s behavior remains in these cases in an important sense voluntary. [Pg.6]

The MIPS were prepared with nicotine as the template to evaluate the feasibility of MIPs as excipients for the controlled transdermal delivery of nicotine [Luis et al, 2014]. The transdermal delivery of nicotine has been suggested as an aid to smoking cessation therapy because a constant plasma level of nicotine reduces the craving for nicotine and therefore, aids in the abstinence from smoking. The MIPs were prepared and included in transdermal systems with vehicles of different polarities. The drug release kinetics revealed that the MIPs can be considered as suitable candidates for the controlled transdermal administration of nicotine. [Pg.646]

Craving for nicotine is, perhaps, a form of self-medication and may accotmt for the higher proportion of smokers among people with mental disorders. Individuals with mental disorders have a higher smoking incidence (e.g., up to 60 % of PTSD... [Pg.1471]

Although not an antidepressant also varenicline can be mentioned here. It is the first nicotinic receptor partial agonist approved to treat smoking addiction. As a partial agonist, it both reduces cravings for and decreases the pleasurable effects of cigarettes and other tobacco products. [Pg.354]

Users may have a persistent desire for nicotine (craving) and unsuccessful attempts to cut down or control its use. [Pg.362]

Clonidine (Catapres), a high blood pressure medication, can be prescribed orally or as a patch for nicotine addiction and doubles the quit rate. It appears to reduce craving for tobacco but does not consistently reduce other withdrawal symptoms. The antidepressant nor-triptylene (Pamelor) triples the quit rate. However, both... [Pg.374]

Treatment of tobacco addiction is very difficult. Dtjctors frequently prescribe substitute forms of nicotine such as chewing gum and skin patches, to help addicts through the physical withdrawal, but these methods often fail to curb psychological cravings for cigarettes. [Pg.51]

The source of that addiction is nicotine. Try to switch to a light cigarette and you ll simply smoke more to get the amount of nicotine you now need. Not want, need. The tobacco companies have known that for decades and they ve made sure that cigarettes deliver the amount of nicotine a smoker craves. Cigarettes truly are delivery systems for nicotine, a substance just as addictive as any other drug. [Pg.114]
