Gas oil, cracking

The fuel vacuum pipe still is also used to recover cracked gas oil from the tar formed in residuum cracking (visbreaking) processes. In this service, it it frequently referred to as a vacuum, flash unit. Pipe stills designed for the production of asphalt are usually the fuel type of unit. 

Atmospheric gas oil has a relatively lower density and sulfur content than vacuum gas oil produced from the same crude. The aromatic content of gas oils varies appreciably, depending mainly on the crude type and the process to which it has been subjected. For example, the aromatic content is approximately 10% for light gas oil and may reach up to 50% for vacuum and cracked gas oil. In Figure 7 the selectivity to methane, ethane, ethylene, gases, gasoline (210°C), diesel (310°C), and coke at 65% level of conversion have been plotted for HYUS zeolites with 28, 21, 12, and 2 Al per unit cell for cracking gas-oil. At MAT conditions, montmorilIonites pillared with alumina clusters, and having similar surface area, generate (at a given conversion level) similar amounts of coke (when used to crack gas oil) irrespective of the iron content of the parent bentonite. Thus, the presence of iron cannot be used to explain the high tendency for coke (and light gas) make of pillared clay catalysts. 

Marine gas oil (MGO) Grade DMA Grade DMA is blended from straight-run and cracked gas oils. This fuel is sometimes identical to 2 diesel fuel and is used in high-speed engines.

Bicyclic aromatics and naphthenes are important components of cracking feed stocks. The former, after cracking in the side chains to gasoline and gas, will remain as smaller bicyclic aromatics in the cracked gas oil. A study of the vanadium catalyzed dehydrogenation reaction showed antimony interacts with vanadium and decreases its dehydrogenation activity. Cracking catalyst was contaminated with vanadium in the laboratory, A portion of this contaminated catalyst was then treated with an antimony containing compound to passivate vanadium. The catalysts were evaluated by cracking gas oil. The yield of hydrogen for passivated catalyst averaged fifteen percent less than for the unpassivated catalyst. 

Results showed that the two-stage TCH process could be used for upgrading Athabasca bitumen and for producing reformer naphtha feedstock, fuel oils, and catalytic cracking gas-oil feedstock. Product weight yields ranging from 86.4% to 93.0% were obtained. A 3 wt % CoO-15 wt % Mo03 on alumina catalyst was found to be sufficiently active to produce specification distillates. Comparison of various catalysts showed some differences in selectivities. However, extended life studies should be carried out to substantiate the differences. 

Simultaneously scientists at Esso Research and Engineering and Mobil Oil were working with X based catalysts [33-35]. Mobil Oil introduced the first zeolite based catalysts for cracking gas oils in 1962 using rare earth exchanged X in a silica-alumina matrix. This replaced the older silica-alumina catalysts. When we made Y available, the Y based catalysts largely replaced the X based catalysts in this application. 

LSWR is finding increasing use in cracking operations, particularly those configured to crack gas oil. The high wax content, indicative of linear paraffins, generates a good ethylene yield and the pyrolysis fuel oil is low in sulphur and used to produce carbon black.
