Starch occurs as microscopic granules in the roots, seeds and tubes of plants. Corn, potatoes, rice and wheat are important commercial sources. Over 5 billion pounds of starch are manufactured in the U.S. each year. About half of the starch is sold as starch and dextrin and about 1.5 billion pounds are converted into starch syrup. Most of the starch is employed to size and stiffen weaving yarn and to finish cloth. Starches are also used in making plywood, wallboard, posterboard and corrugated board. [Pg.319]

The adhesive properties of polyvinyl alcohol also appeared attractive for the manufacture of corrugated board. Adhesives based on the superhydrolyzed grades of tackified polyvinyl alcohol were demonstrated at both the single face and double backer sections of modem conu-gated machines which were ran at full speed. The board had strong diy bonds, high water resistance and showed excellent nonwarp properties. But while the polyvinyl alcohol adhesives were a technical success, they were unable to compete economically against starch adhesives. [Pg.406]

Corrugated and Solid Fiber Boxes. Cormgated and soHd fiber boxes are used primarily as shipping containers. Both types of containers are made from several layers of paperboard, normally referred to as combined board. Container board is the material from which the combined board is fabricated. Although both types of boxes serve the same general purpose, eg, in the handling, storage, and transportation of commodities, they differ markedly in thein manufacture, stmcture, and performance. [Pg.12]

Grammage or substance BS 3432 1980 (90) ISO 536. The weight of material per unit area of the sample, usually confined to papers and boards, excluding the manufactured corrugated sheet but including the component parts of the corrugated sheet. Units are usually g/m2. [Pg.144]
