Utilization of Soda Bagasse Hemicellulose As Corrugated Board Adhesive... [Pg.302]

Soda bagasse spent liquor thus contains two useful renewable polymeric chemical feedstocks hemicellulose and lignin. The uses developed so far for these materials are depicted graphically in Figure 1. The use of the hemicellulose as a corrugated board adhesive is discussed in this chapter. [Pg.302]

Current corrugated board adhesives are prepared from starch that has a much higher molecular weight (> 100,000 mass units). The largest portion of starch in the commercial adhesive preparation is in an undissolved (i.e., kernel)... [Pg.305]

The adhesive properties of polyvinyl alcohol also appeared attractive for the manufacture of corrugated board. Adhesives based on the superhydrolyzed grades of tackified polyvinyl alcohol were demonstrated at both the single face and double backer sections of modem conu-gated machines which were ran at full speed. The board had strong diy bonds, high water resistance and showed excellent nonwarp properties. But while the polyvinyl alcohol adhesives were a technical success, they were unable to compete economically against starch adhesives. [Pg.406]

Large quantities of starch are consumed as a component of adhesives for paper and paperboard, especially in the production of corrugated board. Dextrins, derived from com or potato starch, are used as adhesives for laminated products and as gums for envelope construction and sealing. [Pg.700]

The hemicellulose adhesives were evaluated on 50- by 100-mm2 A-flute corrugated board samples. Commercial single-faced board (125 to 160 g/m2) bonded with a maize starch adhesive and liner (160 g/m2) was obtained. The liner and fluting material were prepared from virgin kraft pulp and were not surface-sized with starch. The single-faced material was cut into samples (50 x 100 m2) with the flutes in the 50-mm direction. Liner samples were cut in 60- by 110-m2 samples. [Pg.304]

The ply adhesion values of test samples glued with the suspended hemicellulose adhesive leveled off at consistencies above 16% solids. The strength of this adhesive above 16% solids was similar to the strength values of industrial corrugated board samples. The industrial board was collected from the mill that supplied the single-faced and liner material. [Pg.309]

The stability of the hemicellulose adiiesives and the effect of particle size were subsequently assessed. Hemicellulose adhesives were prepared with a portion (one-sixth) cooked and the remainder raw with borax and sodium hydroxide as before. Different particle sizes of hemicellulose were used for the suspended portion. The mixtures were used to glue corrugated board test samples after 4 hours or 4 days standing. The results (also on citrus box material) shown in Table III clearly indicate that the ply adhesion strength of the adhesives was not affected by standing or by particle size. [Pg.309]

Corrugated board is produced by the adhesion of a fluted layer of paper to a flat layer. A two-phase starch adhesive is commonly used to join the two layers. The liquid phase, a gelled mixture of starch and sodium hydroxide in water, is called the carrier. The solid phase of ungelled starch and borax is suspended in the carrier phase. The mixture is applied to a warm fluted sheet, which is then placed into contact with a hot flat sheet. The ungelled starch gels from the heat of the sheets. Table 2 shows a recipe for a typical corrugating adhesive [13]. [Pg.502]

Cartons from corrugated board are most often sealed with liquid glues or hot-melt adhesives. However, dextrin adhesives are still used as a result of their low cost and ready availability. Adhesives for sealing cartons must have low and stable viscosity, be able to form strong bonds, and set up quickly. If staining of the carton is not a concern, sodium hydroxide may be added to increase adhesion. A formulation for a white dextrin adhesive is given in Table 5. [Pg.504]
