Most direct measurements of corrosion utilize the weight loss of metal over a period of time on a small sample such as a coupon, wire, or strip. The dimensions of the coupon are important for several reasons. The ratio of surface area to coupon weight should be as high as possible to facilitate detection of small weight losses. This permits the shortest possible exposure period between weightings. Selection of the maximum surface-to-weight ratio, however, may still result in a relatively long test... [Pg.275]

The fluid is formulated from a premium mineral od-base stock that is blended with the required additive to provide antiwear, mst and corrosion resistance, oxidation stabdity, and resistance to bacteria or fungus. The formulated base stock is then emulsified with ca 40% water by volume to the desired viscosity. Unlike od-in-water emulsions the viscosity of this type of fluid is dependent on both the water content, the viscosity of the od, and the type of emulsifier utilized. If the water content of the invert emulsion decreases as a result of evaporation, the viscosity decreases likewise, an increase in water content causes an increase in the apparent viscosity of the invert emulsion at water contents near 50% by volume the fluid may become a viscous gel. A hydrauHc system using a water-in-od emulsion should be kept above the freezing point of water if the water phase does not contain an antifreeze. Even if freezing does not occur at low temperatures, the emulsion may thicken, or break apart with subsequent dysfunction of the hydrauHc system. [Pg.263]

Water—Glycol Solutions. These materials are transparent solutions of water and glycol having good low temperature properties. They frequently contain water-soluble additives to improve performance in corrosion resistance, anti-wear, etc. A water-soluble polymer is commonly utilized to boost viscosity. As solutions their advantage over emulsions is their inherent stabdity. [Pg.263]

Zinc phosphate, Zn2(P0 2> forms the basis of a group of dental cements. Chromium and zinc phosphates are utilized in some metal-treating appHcations to provide corrosion protection and improved paint adhesion. Cobalt(II) phosphate octahydrate [10294-50-5] Co2(P0 2 8H20, is a lavender-colored substance used as a pigment in certain paints and ceramics. Copper phosphates exhibit bioactivity and are used as insecticides and fungicides. Zinc, lead, and silver phosphates are utilized in the production of specialty glasses. The phosphate salts of heavy metals such as Pb, Cr, and Cu, are extremely water insoluble. [Pg.335]

There is a health benefit associated with hindering hydrogen bonding. Alkylphenols as a class are generally regarded as corrosive health hazards, but this corrosivity is eliminated when the hydroxyl group is flanked by bulky substituents in the ortho positions. In fact, hindered phenols as a class of compounds are utilized as antioxidants in plastics with FDA approval for indirect food contact. [Pg.58]

Substituted amides (not of the alkanolamide variety) are sold to diverse low volume markets. They have some utility ki polymers such as polyethylene, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers, acryUc polymers, PVC, polyamides, and polyesters. They have been found effective as pharmaceutical processkig aids, defoamers (qv), antimicrobials, pesticides, kisect repellents, dispersion stabilizers, and corrosion inhibitors. [Pg.186]

Magnetic flow meters are sometimes utilized in corrosive Hquid streams or slurries where a low unrecoverable pressure drop and high rangeabiHty is required. The fluid is required to be electrically conductive. Magnetic flow meters, which use Faraday s law to measure the velocity of the electrically conductive Hquid, are relatively expensive. Their use is therefore reserved for special situations where less expensive meters are not appropriate. Installation recommendations usually specify an upstream straight mn of five pipe diameters, keeping the electrodes in continuous contact with the Hquid. [Pg.65]

The bottoms from the stripper (40—60 wt % acid) are sent to an acid reconcentration unit for upgrading to the proper acid strength and recycling to the reactor. Because of the associated high energy requirements, reconcentration of the diluted sulfuric acid is a cosdy operation. However, a propylene gas stripping process, which utilizes only a small amount of added water for hydrolysis, has been described (63). In this modification, the equiUbrium quantity of isopropyl alcohol is stripped so that acid is recycled without reconcentration. Kquilibrium is attained rapidly at 50°C and isopropyl alcohol is removed from the hydrolysis mixture. Similarly, the weak sulfuric acid process minimizes the reconcentration of the acid and its associated corrosion and pollution problems. [Pg.108]

NonmetalHc centrifugal pumps utilize polymers for all components coming into contact with the pumping media. Even the steel (qv) shaft is sleeved with plastic to isolate the shaft from the fluid. Mechanical seals are reversed so that the metal face does not come into contact with the corrosive... [Pg.297]

Titanium metal was first used as a material for aerospace. In the late 1970s, new appHcations developed that utilize the metal s exceUent corrosion... [Pg.109]

The anticorrosion properties of lanolin have been utilized over a considerable period, and the product has the status of a temporary corrosion inhibitor (186) (see Corrosion and corrosion control). There is probably potential for greater use of the poorer grades of lanolin for long-term storage and protection of machine parts. Other uses have been reviewed in detail (182). [Pg.355]

Antimony hardens the lead used in the manufacture of small arms ammunition. Antimony alloyed with lead is also used in cable covering, sheet and pipe, and collapsible tubes. In these appHcations, antimony is utilized to increase strength and inhibit corrosion. [Pg.198]
