Optical Techniques. The most important tool in a museum laboratory is the low power stereomicroscope. This instmment, usually used at magnifications of 3—50 x, has enough depth of field to be useful for the study of surface phenomena on many types of objects without the need for removal and preparation of a sample. The information thus obtained can relate to toohnarks and manufacturing techniques, wear patterns, the stmcture of corrosion, artificial patination techniques, the stmcture of paint layers, or previous restorations. This procedure offers the possibiUty of remote noncontact velocity measurement, where no probes disturb the flow. It is thus compatible for use with hot or corrosive gases. Commercial laser velocimeters have become weU-developed measurement tools. Examples of laser velocimetry include remote measurement of wind velocity, measurement of vortex air flow near the wing tips of large aircraft, and in vivo measurement of the velocity of blood flow. [Pg.15]

Other alloys have been developed for use in particular corrosive environments at high temperatures. Several of these are age-hardenable alloys which contain additions of aluminum and titanium. Eor example, INCONEL alloys 718 and X-750 [11145-80-5] (UNS N07750) have higher strength and better creep and stress mpture properties than alloy 600 and maintain the same good corrosion and oxidation resistance. AHoy 718 exhibits excellent stress mpture properties up to 705°C as well as good oxidation resistance up to 980°C and is widely used in gas turbines and other aerospace appHcations, and for pumps, nuclear reactor parts, and tooling. [Pg.7]

These oxazolines have cationic surface-active properties and are emulsifying agents of the water-in-oil type. They ate acid acceptors and, in some cases, corrosion inhibitors (see Corrosion). Reaction to oxazoline also is useful as a tool for determination of double-bond location in fatty acids (2), or for use as a protective group in synthesis (3). The oxazolines from AEPD and TRIS AMINO contain hydroxyl groups that can be esterified easily, giving waxes (qv) with saturated acids and drying oils (qv) with unsaturated acids. [Pg.17]

The injection mold need not be made of noncatalytic metals any high grade tool steel may be used because the plastic cools in the mold and undergoes Httle decomposition. However, the mold requires good venting to allow the passage of small amounts of acid gas as well as air. Vents tend to become clogged by corrosion and must be cleaned periodically. [Pg.440]

Chromium carbide is important in powder preparations designed for thermal spray apphcations of corrosion and wear-resistant coatings on tool and machine parts. Lower carbon carbides of chromium are important in hardfacing tods and electrodes for weld-apphed ovedays on machine wear surfaces. Martensitic Stainless Steels. The martensitic stainless steels have somewhat higher carbon contents than the ferritic grades for the equivalent chromium level and are therefore subject to the austenite—martensite transformation on heating and quenching. These steels can be hardened significantly. The higher carbon martensitic types, eg, 420 and 440, are typical cutiery compositions, whereas the lower carbon grades are used for special tools, dies, and machine parts and equipment subject to combined abrasion and mild corrosion. [Pg.127]
