Corrosion Prevention Barriers

The most secure corrosion-resistant protection of the metal is observed with use of basalt flakes. These flakes of 2 mm length and 1—2 mm diameter are laid parallel to the metal siuface with the application of the coating and form a durable corrosion-preventive barrier of cold ceramics type. There are 200—300 flake layers in a typical coating layer. [Pg.346]

Steel bridges corrode on exposure of steel to atmospheric conditions. The extent of corrosion is greatly enhanced because of marine (salt spray) exposure and other corrosive industrial environments. The only corrosion preventive method is to provide a barrier coating such as paint. [Pg.130]

Alkenylsuccinic anhydrides made from several linear alpha olefins are used in paper sizing, detergents, and other uses. Sulfosuccinic acid esters serve as surface active agents. Alkyd resins (qv) are used as surface coatings. Chlorendric anhydride [115-27-5] is used as a flame resistant component (see Flame retardants). Tetrahydrophthalic acid [88-98-2] and hexahydrophthalic anhydride [85-42-7] have specialty resin appHcations. Gas barrier films made by grafting maleic anhydride to polypropylene [25085-53-4] film are used in food packaging (qv). Poly(maleic anhydride) [24937-72-2] is used as a scale preventer and corrosion inhibitor (see Corrosion and corrosion control). Successful operation of the gaseous diffusion process requires a special, fine-pored diffusion barrier, mechanically rehable and chemically resistant to corrosive attack by the process gas. For an effective separating barrier, the diameter of the pores must approach the range of the mean free path of the gas molecules, and in order to keep the total barrier area required as small as possible, the number of pores per unit area must be large. The flnid snlfate solntion also wets the snrface better and thns spreads the snlfnric acid. The surface slope at the placement of all hydrants, monitors and hose reels should be slightly away from the device itself so water will drain away and prevent corrosion effects. Where automobile traffic may be prevalent, protective post or railing should be provided to prevent impacts to the devices. The protective barriers should not affect the hose connection, use of hoses or obscure the spray from monitors.
