Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) a flat pressed wood composite panel composed of randomly oriented wood fibers obtained by thermomechanical wood pulping and bonded by hot-pre.ssing by using thermosetting adhesive resins. Surface samples were collected in snow pits under ultra-clean conditions described elsewhere [13] with the exception that samples for anion analysis were collected in polystyrene cups precleaned without the use of acids. This is illustrated below by the high-yield synthesis of a heterotrinuclear complex having a linear M— Pt—M core, Section C. Figure 3 illustrates the distributions found for Pu and Am when a mixed sample of these tracers was infiltrated into a large (30 cm x 30 cm) block of Bandolier tuff (6). The nuclide activities were determined simultaneously by coring sections of the tuff and represent the activity distributions in the rock. It is obvious that although the activities are both normalized at 100% at the surface the increased dispersion of the plutonium concentration during elution leads to an increase of almost an order of magnitude in its activity relative to Am at the 5-6 cm depth. It is highly unlikely that abnormal flow paths or movement of colloidal clay particles would discriminate between americium and plutonium therefore this experimental result tends to discount these possible types of mechanisms. Invertase from a Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutant could be separated into two fractions on the basis of solubility in ammonium sulfate.382 The soluble fraction reacted with endo-(l - 6)-a-mannanase, when it became insoluble. The results suggested that the insoluble fraction contained only the highly branched, core section, but the soluble fraction also had the (l->6)-a-D-mannan chain attached. [Pg.248]

Coring Strategy. Sediment cores were collected with a thin-walled polycarbonate tube fitted with a piston and operated from the lake surface by rigid drive rods (30). This device recovers the very loose uncompacted sediment surface as well as deeper strata without disturbance or displacement (core-shortening, cf. refs. 31 and 32).
