Copper acetate, basic

Copper acetate, ferrous acetate, silver acetate [563-63-3] basic aluminum acetate, nickel acetate [373-02-4] cobalt acetate, and other acetate salts have been reported to furnish anhydride when heated. In principle, these acetates could be obtained from low concentration acetic acid. CompHcations of soHds processing and the scarcity of knowledge about these thermolyses make industrial development of this process expensive. In the eady 1930s, Soviet investigators discovered the reaction of dinitrogen tetroxide [10544-72-6] and sodium acetate [127-09-3] to form anhydride ...

The basic copper acetate is used as a mordant in dyeing and printing in the manufacture of Paris green and other pigments and as a fungicide and insecticide. 

The compositions of the basic acetates with varying copper acetate-copper hydroxide-water ratios may be determined by elemental analyses of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and copper. X-ray and thermogravimetric analyses should provide further information on their compositions.

The saturated solution of copper acetate is prepared by dissolving 100 g. of finely pulverized copper acetate in 1200 cc. of boiling water. If the preparation contains basic salt, a few cubic centimeters of acetic acid is added, and the solution is filtered. The solution is cooled to 350 before use.

Of the arsenic-free pigments the best known are Mountain green and blue (basic copper carbonates) and Bremen green and blue (copper hydroxides) use is made, but less commonly, of greens based on the basic acetate, basic sulphate, oxychloride and stannate of copper, already mentioned. All these products may be adulterated with the usual extraneous white substances, such mixtures being given special names.

Inorganic copper compounds include cuprous oxide cupric oxide copper hydroxide copper carbonate basic copper ammonium carbonate copper acetate copper sulfate copper sulfate, tribasic (Bordeau Mixture) copper oxychloride copper silicate copper lime dust and copper potassium sulfide. Figure 5.10 shows a package of Kocide 101, copper containing products.
