Coordination studies of acyclic thioether ligands to silver(I) centers has also been studied. Poly(alkylthio)aromatic systems have been used to form supramolecular silver(I) compounds. The SC descriptions of the electronic mechanisms of the three six-electron pericyclic gas-phase reactions discussed in this paper (namely, the Diels-Alder reaction between butadiene and ethene [11], the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition offulminic acid to ethyne [12], and the disrotatory electrocyclic ring-opening of cyclohexadiene) take the theory much beyond the HMO and RHF levels employed in the formulation of the most popular MO-based treatments of pericyclic reactions, including the Woodward-Hoffmarm mles [1,2], Fukui s frontier orbital theory [3] and the Dewar-Zimmerman model [4—6]. The SC wavefunction maintains near-CASSCF quality throughout the range of reaction coordinate studied for each reaction but, in contrast to its CASSCF counterpart, it is very much easier to interpret and to visualize directly. 

The remainder of this Chapter 3 is organized as follows. In Section 3.2 we will provide a literature review of process expansions and multisite planning and coordination studies in the chemical process industry. Then we will explain the problem statement and proposed model formulation in Sections 3.3 and 3.4, respectively. In Section 3.5, we will illustrate the performance of the model through various industrial-scale refinery examples and scenarios. The chapter ends with some concluding remarks in Section 3.6.

Unlike the case of simple diatomic molecules, the reaction coordinate in polyatomic molecules does not simply correspond to the change of a particular chemical bond. Therefore, it is not yet clear for polyatomic molecules how the observed wavepacket motion is related to the reaction coordinate. Study of such a coherent vibration in ultrafast reacting system is expected to give us a clue to reveal its significance in chemical reactions. In this study, we employed two-color pump-probe spectroscopy with ultrashort pulses in the 10-fs regime, and investigated the coherent nuclear motion of solution-phase molecules that undergo photodissociation and intramolecular proton transfer in the excited state.

The thus prepared ligands la-le-H4 are introduced into coordination studies with titanium(IV) ions in the presence of base (M2C03 M = Li, Na, K) with methanol as solvent. Negative ESI-MS (electron spray ionization mass spectrometry) of the obtained orange-red solids in methanol reveals that coordination compounds of general formula M2[l2(OCH3)2Ti2] are formed (Scheme 1.3.2) [20, 21]. 

We have also prepared the Schiff base and sulfur-linked ferrocene bis-crown ether ligands (65) (27) and (28) (Scheme 12). Preliminary coordination studies have shown both to be K + selective however, (27) is not electrochemically well behaved. Unexpectedly, addition of K + to electrochemical solutions of (28) results in a cathodic shift of the ferrocene redox couple, which may be attributable to conformational steric effects involving the sulfur heteroatom lone pairs of electrons.

Much of this progress has been achieved using basic techniques that were developed in the early 1980s. New techniques and improved interpretations await discovery and development. A coordinated study at the basin to global scale of the distribution of natural radionuclides, as well as their partitioning among dissolved, colloidal, and particulate phases, would improve our ability to exploit these tracers. 

The most commonly used actinide in Schiff base coordination studies is the uranyl ion. Many comprehensive reviews pulling together numerous examples of (primarily) coordination with these ligands have been published and the reader is referred to these for a more thorough discussion. A few current representative examples will be presented here. 

Macrocyclic ligands with all-nitrogen donor sets are much studied and both tin and, in particular, lead are popular subjects in coordination studies of these ligands. Examples of such ligands used to complex tin include (66) and (67), prepared by Schiff-base condensations. The complex (68) was isolated from an attempted template synthesis of a macrocycle in which the condensation of the component parts of the ligand was incomplete.
