An innovation is a direct-contact condenser mounted on the vapor body. A short piece of vertical pipe connects the vapor body with the condenser to minimize piping and pressure drop. This design also eliminates structural steel for support of a separate condenser. For cooling tower applications, the hotwell is elevated to permit gravity flow of water from the hotwell to the top of the cooling tower, thus eliminating the need for a pump. [Pg.97]

Bacteria are also responsible for destruction of wood, for example in cooling towers,20 by breaking down the cellulose fibers. Certain bacteria derive their metabolic energy from the iron(II)-iron(III) redox cycle. These iron bacteria can proliferate to the extent that they block pipes. In any case, they will discolor water. In addition, objectionable growths of algae can occur in water tanks or circuits, given even minimal supplies of nutrients. Consequently, biocidal agents are widely used in the treatment of industrial, as well as municipal, water supplies. [Pg.279]

Chandelon s method [60] is more widely used. Here 1 part by weight of mercury is dissolved in 10 parts of nitric acid (65% HN03, s.g. 1.40) by moderate heating the solution, heated to 55%, is poured into a flask or retort with a capacity at least 6 times that of the liquid, containing, apart from the above mentioned solution, 8.3 parts of 87% alcohol. A method due to Strzoda 1 consists in passing the acid, after concentration in open lead pans, downwards through a series of vertical pipes heated externally by producer gas.
