Get yourself a stemless funnel, or, at least, a short-stemmed funnel. Why Go ahead and use a stem funnel and watch the crystals come out in the stem as the solution cools, blocking up the funnel (Fig. 43). [Pg.95]

Apply some drops of kerosene on the cooling block of the horizontal electrophoresis apparatus and apply the IPG strips with the acidic side to the anode. Make 1 cm broad strips from 2 mm thick filter paper. One or both blocks are equipped with holes to which tubes are soldered for the solvent inlet, including sample injection and eluate outlet. Figure 17 illustrates the case in which inlet and outlet capillaries are placed in the upper heated block. It is, however, more advantageous to situate these capillaries in the lower cooled block for the reason that the lower wall is the accumulation wall of the channel so that the sample, after being injected, is transferred to the vicinity of this wall. In this way equilibration at the head of the channel is facilitated and the time required for primary relaxation is reduced. At the channel end, the solute is concentrated at the accumulation wall, and its exit is easier if the capillary is situated in this block so that the sample does not have to overcome the field strength. [Pg.109]

Fold up a filter cone out of a piece of filter paper (Fig. 57). It should fit nicely, within a single centimeter or so of the top of the funnel. For those who wish to filter with more panache, try using fluted filter paper (see world famous fan-folded fluted filter paper, Fig. 67). To cool the entire assembly the metal box on top of the cooling block is filled with crushed dry ice and a few ml of isopropanol until the desired temperature is reached. A constant flow of N2, precooled by passing it through a coiled copper tube immersed in liquid nitrogen, is passed through the block to prevent moisture from condensing onto the cell windows. [Pg.251]

A few precautions should be observed when working with this cell. Under conditions of high humidity it might be necessary to place a mask over the front of the cooling block with an opening just wide enough for the i.r. beam to pass. Cooling blocks made of aluminum have many applications. These are machined as in Fig. [Pg.45]

The test facility needs to be established to test the heat transfer performance and heat transport limitations. Both transient and steady-state tests should be conducted for a micro heat pipe. For low-temperamre heat pipes, however, the steady-state test is of most concerned. A typical experimental system for low-temperature heat pipes similar to the one shown in Fig. 3 would normally be used. The test facility shown in Fig. 3 consists of the heat pipe, a heat power supply and measuring unit, a cooling unit, and a data acquisition unit for the temperature measurements. The operating temperature of a heat pipe can be controlled by a cooling block connected to a cooling bath, where the temperature of the coolant is maintained at a constant temperature based on the designed operating temperature. The heat source is directly connected to the evaporator. [Pg.1820]
