The foam cells then form deposits of fat in the intima and media of the blood vessel wall, which are called fatty streaks the early form of plaques. This initiates an inflammatory process, as a result of which even more monocytes are recruited into the sub-intimal space. The proliferation of the smooth muscle cells leads to the thickening of the blood-vessel wall, accumulation of more lipids, and development of a lipid-necrotic nucleus, which is covered with fibrous tissue, forming the fibrous cap of a plaque. The narrowing of the vessel can remain unnoticed by the patient for many years. However, in the course of time, a stable plaque can also become unstable, when activated cells within the plaque secrete matrix proteases, which degrade the fibrous cap (Fig. 5.148). This leads within minutes to rupture and thrombus formation, causing occlusion of blood-vessels and resulting in a heart attack, unstable angina pectoris or a stroke. [Pg.413]

Bubble columns in series have been used to establish the same effective mix of plug-flow and back-mixing behavior required for Hquid-phase oxidation of cyclohexane, as obtained with staged reactors in series. WeU-mixed behavior has been established with both Hquid and air recycle. The choice of one bubble column reactor was motivated by the need to minimize sticky by-products that accumulated on the walls (93). Here, high air rate also increased conversion by eliminating reaction water from the reactor, thus illustrating that the choice of a reactor system need not always be based on compromise, and solutions to production and maintenance problems are complementary. Sorption. Most organics are sorbed to a very small degree on the biofloc, ie, < 2 percent. Exceptions are the nondegradable pesticide Lindane, other pesticides, and PCBs. Ash fusion characteristics are important in ash deposition in boilers. Ash deposition occurring on the furnace walls is termed slagging, whereas accumulation on the superheater and other tubes is termed fouling. For proper use of the equations, the chamber shape must conform to the spray pattern. With cocurrent gas-spray flow, the angle of spread of single-fluid pressure nozzles and two-fluid pneumatic nozzles is such that wall impingement wiU occur at a distance approximately four chamber diameters below the nozzle therefore, chambers employing these atomizers should have vertical height-to-diameter ratios of at least 4 and, more usually, 5. The discharge cone below the vertical portion should have a slope of at least 60°, to minimize settling accumulations, and is used entirely to accelerate gas and solids for entty into the exit duct. [Pg.1238]

Baffled Tanks For vigorous agitation of thin suspensions, the tank is provided with baffles which are flat vertical strips set radially along the tank wall, as illustrated in Figs. 18-15 and 18-16. Four baffles are almost always adequate. A common baffle width is one-tenth to one-twelfth of the tank diameter (radial dimension). For agitating slurries, the baffles often are located one-half of their width from the vessel wall to minimize accumulation of solids on or behind them. [Pg.1628]

Rotaiy wheel atomizers require 0.8 to 1.0 kWh/1,000 L. The lateral throw of a spray wheel requires a large diameter to prevent accumulation on the wall length to diameter ratios of 0.5 to 1.0 are in use in such cases. The downward throw of spray nozzles permits smaller diameters but greater depths L/D ratios of 4 to 5 or more are used. Spray vessel diameters of 15 m (50 ft) or more are known.
