Control opportunities

As pointed out above, the great advantage of semi-batch operation is the possibihty of controlling both reactor temperature and polymer quality by means of manipulating the feed flow rates of the different reagents, that is, monomer(s), chain transfer agent and emulsifier. In this section special emphasis is made on the control of the copolymer composition by manipulating comonomer feed flow rates. [Pg.96]

When emulsion copolymerisation is scaled-up to industrial size reactors, that is, reaction volumes larger than 10 m, temperature control becomes an issue. A larger reaction volume is always accompanied by a smaller reactor wall heat transfer area at the reactor wall per unit volume of the reaction mixture. As a consequence, the heat transfer rate per unit volume of the reaction mixture through the reactor wall to the cooling fluid flowing through the jacket decreases when scaling-up, see Equation 4.26. [Pg.96]

To produce latex with a given copolymer composition the ratio of the monomer concentrations in the polymer particles must be kept at the value that ensures the production [Pg.97]

In what follows, several monomer feeding strategies to control copolymer composition in semi-batch operation will be presented, namely feeding strategies to maintain /i at the value required to produce the desired copolymer composition distribution. [Pg.98]

The excellent diastereoselection of all three of these substrate-directed allylation reactions is consistent with reaction occurring through Felkin transition states analogous to 39 (Fig. 11-6). These examples illustrate the excellent stereochemical control opportunities that exist in ( )-crotylation reactions of a-methyl chiral aldehydes, especially when the -position is branched (as in the (7s)-crotylation of 25 and 32, see above). [Pg.415]

Process benefits Flexibility for process control Reduced separation of intermediates Better reaction control Opportunities to exploit modeling and rapid development methods Novel reactor options Possible to run processes under more productive conditions (e.g., higher concentrations and organic solvents). Combination of the above methods of suppressing the influence of the non-informative factors has given an opportunity of detecting effectively defects in the objects that were supposed to be useless for electromagnetic control earlier. [Pg.342]

An equally important challenge for nanocrystal assembly is the fonnation of specific nanocrystal arrangements in solution. By using complementary DNA strands as tethers, Mirkin et al [102, 103] fonned aggregates of gold nanocrystals with specific sizes Alivisatos et al also used DNA to stmcture semiconductor nanocrystal molecules, though in this case the molecules contained only a few nanocrystals placed controlled distances from each other [104, 105 and 106]. The potential applications of biomolecular teclmiques to this area of nanoscience are immense, and the opportunities have been reviewed in several recent publications [107, 108, 109 and 110]. [Pg.2903]

Test salons are often used to evaluate hair fixatives. Half-head studies are performed, with the test product appHed to one side of the head and a control product to the other in reaHstic use amounts. Similar properties as desctibed in laboratory tests are measured. Finished products are often sent to testers homes where they have an opportunity to evaluate the products in real use situations for extended pedods. [Pg.452]

The development of computer capabiUties in hardware and software, related instmmentation and control, and telecommunication technology represent an opportunity for improvement in safety (see COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY). Plant operators can be provided with a variety of user-friendly diagnostic aids to assist in plant operations and incipient failure detection. Communications can be more rapid and dependable. The safety control systems can be made even more rehable and maintenance-free. Moreover, passive safety features to provide emergency cooling for both the reactor system and the containment building are being developed. [Pg.244]

Under modern condition the ordinary layman...has neither the opportunity nor the capacity to inspect or to determine the fitness of an automobile for use he must rely on the manufacturer who has control of its construction, and to some degree on the dealer who, to the limited extent called for by the manufacturer s instructions, inspects and services it before delivery. In such a marketing milieu his remedies and those of persons who properly claim through him should not depend "upon the intricacies of the law of sales. The obligation of the manufacturer should not be based alone on privity of contract. It should rest, as was once said,... [Pg.98]
