Contributions to society

GCPF is the recognized worldwide representative of the Crop Protection Industry. Its network comprises six Regional Associations Africa/Middle-East, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Japan, Latin America and North America. GCPF promotes understanding of the Crop Protection Industry s contribution to society and to co-ordinate the membership network of member associations.

In 1999 the Royal Society of Chemistry published a compendium book setting out the contributions to society that have been made by chemistry. The title, The Age of the Molecule neatly encapsulated the philosophy that a molecular understanding is the basis for optimum exploitation of new substances or materials provided by chemistry. Much of the material in the book was drawn from 20 Century developments but with evident foundations on the advances made in the latter half of the 19 Century. If the preceding 150 years is the Age of the Molecule then the 20 Century has been The Century of the Macromolecule . 

Historian Daniel Boorstin made the distinction between the hero and the celebrity clearly. The hero was distinguished by his achievement the celebrity by his image or trademark, he wrote. The hero created himself the celebrity is created by the media. The hero was a big man the celebrity is a big name. Too often, the media manufactures celebrities and packages them as heroes. We learn little of their contributions to society and more than we need to about their fashions or love affairs. That is not to say some celebrities are not heroes. In fact, more than a few athletes, actors, and artists have broken barriers and dedicated themselves to important humanitarian causes. Unfortunately, those actions command less attention than the latest scandal. 

More than 44 billion will be spent in the U. S. for research and development during 1978. The source of funds and implementors of R D are indicated in figure 1 which shows that industry funds 43% of the R D and performs 68%. Unfortunately, a high percentage of R D results have a limited circulation, are carefully filed and their potential contribution to society is lost, or delayed to be reinvented in a later R D program. The huge investment and potential benefits involved provide tremendous economic motivation for proper selection of R D objectives, plus evaluation and commercialization of appropriate R D results. 

The qualitative importance of the CPI to the U.S. economy lies mainly in its contribution of synthetic materials and semifinished materials for further processing and manufacturing. It has been exceedingly successful in displacing natural products. Consider the replacement of natural dyes with synthetic dyes cotton, wool, and silk with synthetic fibers herbal and natural medicines with antibiotics smoky coal with cleaner burning oil and clean-burning natural gas, and many other examples. The CPI has been a major contributor to every sector of human need. Table 8.36 is a partial list of the many contributions to society by the CPI.

Chemical engineers, as a group, have made significant contributions to society in the last decade, as recorded earlier in this volume. These contributions have improved the quality of life — providing food, clothes, shelter, transport, health-care, and the like. Much of the comfort and enjoyment that the Industrial Revolution has brought to mankind can be attributed to the work of chemical engineers.
