Contracts technology development

AEA Technologies, Eco Logic, and General Atomics were awarded contracts to develop EDPs and to perform further required demonstration testing for disposal of the chemical weapons at Blue Grass Army Depot. The initial (preliminary) EDPs were submitted in July 2001, and drafts of the final EDPs were submitted to PMACWA in October 2001.

In 2004, the KAERI together with the Korean Institute of Energy Research (KIER) and the Korean Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), received a contract from the MOST to launch the Project Nuclear Hydrogen Production Technology Development and Demonstration(NHDD) . The team selected the S-I process connected to a high temperature gas cooled reactor for further development and a demonstration. 

Sustainable Energy Technologies (SET) was contracted to develop an interface converter with the capability to accept a power input from a photovoltaic or wind source. SET delivered two 5 kW photovoltaic interface converters that were tested by Northern Power Systems in Waitsfield, Vermont...

In all this, governments have an important role to play the stimulus they have given to technology development with R D contracts and other initiatives has been instrumental in establishing production capacity, for example in C-fibre production in the USA. 

The solar eell manufacturing process begins with wafers manufactured from silicon and other materials, followed by encapsulation into panels and then assembly into systems. At times, the research program deployed more than 100 million a year in product development funding. Numerous private companies were under contract to develop the technologies needed to make the solar cell systems economically feasible. The JPL role was to manage numerous eontracts with private companies to develop the needed technology to economically manufacture the solar cells.
