Fuel systems have already experienced an invasion by plastics. The use of plastics can be seen in fuel tanks, fuel rails, fuel pump parts, connectors, hoses, and fuel filters. Furthermore, external and internal lighting systems have already gone primarily to plastics. Wheel systems have adopted plastics much earlier in the construction of tires, wheel covers, and wheel house liners, although wheel systems remain primarily the domain of metals. [Pg.51]

Rubber calenders consist of at least three rolls which can be adjusted for gap, speed and temperature. They are used to form rubber sheeting to required lengths and thickness for subsequent building operations. They are also used for frictioning or skim coating fabrics. The materials problems in the construction of microchips are related to both diffusion and chemical interactions between the component layers, as shown above. There is probably a link between drese two properties, since the formation of inter-metallic compounds of medium or high chemical stability frequently leads to tire formation of a compound ban ier in which tire diffusion coefficients of both components are lower than in the pure metals. [Pg.220]

The production of tires and inner tubes involves three general steps mixing and preliminary forming of the raw materials, formation of individual parts of the product, and constructing and curing the final product. The remarkable electrical property of germanium that caused the unprecedented demand for it is its ability to permit the flow of electricity in one direction and resist the flow in the other direction. Although vacuum tubes are used m tire construction of rectifiers to convert alternating current to direct current, many of them are bulky, fragile, and not sufficiently durable. A germanium rectifier only a few millimeters in diameter dissipates no heat, reacts instantly, and has about ten times the average life of a vacuum tube. [Pg.690]

The civil engineering market for scrap tires encompasses several distinct uses. Whole tires have been used to construct retaining walls and crash barriers. One publicized use is the construction of houses and at least one motel (7). Whole tires have been used in erosion control, and to constmct breakwaters and artificial reefs. [Pg.19]

The goal of most scrap tire utilization projects is to find markets for scrap tires so that they do not end up in landfills or on stockpiles. Ironically, one potentially significant use of tires is in the construction and management of landfills. In the same way that natural mbber is predominandy used in blends, it is also predominandy used in tire manufacture. Its excellent building tack, low heat buildup, low rolling resistance, and good low temperature performance make it the polymer of choice for many parts of tire construction, for both passenger and truck vehicles.
