Connections to the Environment

We return now to our observation that the open system in Figure 14.4 has one extra degree of freedom (/ = 4) compared to the homogeneous fluid phase (A,B) by itself, i.e., if it were not connected to the environment. A number of components could be controlled externally in this way, each with its own membrane, and each would add one degree of freedom to the composite system. That is, each must have its chemical potential specified before the composite system can be fully defined. Therefore if we separate components into two types, those whose potentials are fixed within the system (call them c,)and those whose potentials are fixed in the environment (cg) (the nomenclature of these two types of components will be discussed separately below), the phase rule as derived previously (14.47) would be written... 

To summarise, besides mass streams, there are two utilities, electric energy and steam. The System is connected to the environment which consists of several environment nodes. The introduction of several environment nodes may look confusing. The reason for that is the need for keeping information about detailed source or destination of streams connecting the system with the... 

The column of the periodic table that calcium hves in (two from the left side) appears to contain several chemical alternatives at first. Above calcium sits beryllium and magnesium below it, strontium and barium. In a lab, they might substitute, but we aren t in a lab. We are in a bving cell connected to the environment. Of the instmments described only some are suitable for use outside the laboratory. Where any instrument is carried into a flammable environment it should either be certified as intrinsically safe for exposure to the flammable atmosphere or isolated from the atmosphere such as by keeping it within a purged enclosure. Any probe connected to the instmment must be separately considered as a possible ignition source. Electrometers are described in [ 1531. Fig. 3 shows an idealised solar collector (generator) containing adsorbent which is connected to a condenser that rejects heat to the environment and an insulated box containing a liquid receiver and a flooded evaporator. Fig. 4 shows the p-T-x (pressure - temperature - concentration or Clapeyron diagram) for the adsorbent-adsorbate pair with typical temperatures. 

The hydroboration is a regioselective reaction. In general the addition will lead to a product, where the boron is connected to the less substituted or less sterically hindered carbon center. If the olefinic carbons do not differ much in reactivity or their sterical environment, the regioselectivity may be low. SafeChem, a subsidiary of Dow, has developed a handling system for chlorinated solvents that allows them to be used in closed-loop degreasing systems.
