Confinement operations

Most poultry production, and a growing percentage of swiae production, takes place ia iatensive, confinement operations. Much of the poultry production is carried out under a system of vertical iategration ia which a producer hatches the chicks, grows them ia the producer s faciUties or ia contract facihties, provides the feed, processes the animals, and markets the product. This system of vertically iategrated production is not as common ia the swiae iadustry. [Pg.141]

A Hazardous Materials Technician can take more aggressive action toward hazardous materials incidents than an operations level first responder. They can plug, patch, and stop a release. Their training is of at least 24 h, equal to that of the first responder at the operation level in addition, the technician must have competency and the employer shall certify that competency in the following areas (1) function of the Incident Command System (ICS) (2) proper PPE selection (3) hazard and risk assessment techniques (4) advanced control, containment, and confinement operations (5) decontamination procedures - or lack of decontamination (6) termination procedures and... [Pg.971]

Toxic gases are of primary concern in closed animal housing, especially in swine operations. Because of the intensive swine confinement operations with buildings... [Pg.2815]

The most important gases are ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, and methane. A number of vapors, which represent the odors of manure decomposition, such as organic acids, amines, amides, alcohols, carbonyls, and sulfides, are also produced. Respirable particles, which may be loaded with endotoxins, are also a major health problem in swine confinement operations. [Pg.2815]

Know how to perform basic control, containment and/or confinement operations within the capabilities of the resources and personal protective equipment available with their unit. [Pg.245]

High-Pressure Water Jet Systems. High-pressure water jet systems employ spray nozzles set above the water surface on floating rafts or other structures. The nozzles are positioned so that they spray in an overlapping, fan-shaped pattern across the surface of the water. They are directed downward at an angle to create a countercurrent to the water movement. Water pressure to the nozzles must be maintained for the duration of the confinement operation or until other methods are employed. With sufficient water pressure, confinement can be accomplished at current speeds greater than 1.0 mph. [Pg.286]

In relating nutrition and infection, two areas of Importance must be considered (1) public health, i.e., the prevention and treatment of human disease and metabolic disorders and (2) livestock and poultry production. The production of meat, fibre, and animal materials continues to be a more intensive operation in the agricultural system of this country and the world. The number of high density systems or confinement operations will continue to increase. With the expansion of these operations, new and more severe problems of disease control have appeared. The nutritionists that develop diets for these confinement operations are responsible not only for providing the basic nutrient requirements, but are also called upon to optimize the health of the animals through diet to reduce the impact of infection and other stresses We hope the information presented here will be a step in that direction. [Pg.225]

Atmospheric or gaseous corrosion in confined environments, during transport, storage, or any other confined operation... [Pg.839]

Starting in the 1950s and 1960s in Western Europe and North America, many farmers intensified their livestock production by using semiautomated structures called confinement buildings (98). Confinement operations can involve poultry, beef, swine, dairy cattle, or veal calves. The dusts and gases associated... [Pg.124]
