Concrete, definition

Although pyrethroids have been developed without a concrete definition, it is quite difficult to define this group of compounds based on their chemical structures. As such, I would like to propose the following definition ... [Pg.235]

The construction of a model starts out with the proper choice of a system. Thus, we have to define what the term system shall mean in the context of environmental models. Some disciplines use it in a fairly abstract way. The Oxford English Dictionary characterizes a system as a set or assemblage of things connected, associated, or interdependent, so as to form a complex unity. We prefer a more concrete definition (see Fig. 21.1a) ... [Pg.949]

In all respects the relations are similar to those considered in the section concerning an active catalyst, but now there should be not one but several broken lines of the reactions and the same number of secant lines on Fig. 43. For the concrete definition let us analyze in Fig. 44a the dehydrogenation (I) and dehydration (II) of an alcohol on Ni where all the values are known (Section II,D). Therefore, Fig. 44a... [Pg.118]

Concrete definition of equilibrium state must be performed for each constitutive model (characterized by the observer s scales of Sect. 1.1 and mainly Sect. 2.3) by time fixing of some quantities from those determining their states (see Rem. 6). Time persistency is usually difficult to achieve (because of molecular fluctuation) and therefore to describe real materials by such constitutive models we must add to constitutive equations (as their regularity) the conditions of stability by which the time permanence of equilibrium state S4 is assured. For details see Sects. 2.1-2.4, 3.8, 4.7 and Rems. 7,9, 11 in Chap. 2. Although one eqrulibrium state would suffice, typically there are more equilibrium states often forming the equilibrium process as their time sequence, see Rem. 12. [Pg.13]

There is a concrete definition of what success looks like for your health and safety program. The organization has the willpower to make major changes when necessary. [Pg.310]

Oakmoss. Extracts of oakmoss are extensively used in perfumery to furnisli parts of the notes of the fougnre or chypre type. The first step in the preparation of an oakmoss extract is treatment of the Hchen Evemiaprunastri (L.) Ach., collected from oak trees mainly in southern and central Europe, with a hydrocarbon solvent to obtain a concrete. The concrete is then further processed by solvent extraction or distillation to more usable products, of which absolutes are the most versatile for perfumery use. A definitive analysis of oakmoss volatiles was performed in 1975 (52). The principal constituents of a Yugoslav oakmoss are shown in Table 15 (53). A number of phenoHc compounds are responsible for the total odor impression. Of these, methyl P-orcinol carboxylate is the most characteristic of oakmoss. [Pg.314]

Some authorities question whether dmnkeimess can result from the inhalation of ethyl alcohol vapors. Experience has demonstrated that in any event such intoxication is indeed rare (281). There is no concrete evidence that the inhalation of ethyl alcohol vapor will cause cirrhosis. Liver function is definitely impaired during alcohol intoxication (282), making the subject more susceptible to the toxic effects of chlorinated hydrocarbons. [Pg.414]

Corrosion is generally taken to be the waste of a metal by the action of corrosive agents. However, a wider definition is the degradation of a material through contact with its environment. Thus, corrosion can include non-metallic materials such as concrete and plastics and mechanisms such as cracking in addition to wastage (i.e. loss of material). This chapter is primarily concerned with metallic corrosion, through a variety of mechanisms. [Pg.890]

On the other hand, corrosion has been defined as the undesirable deterioration of a metal or alloy, i.e. an interaction of the metal with its environment that adversely affects those properties of the metal that are to be preserved. This definition —which will be referred to as the deterioration definition —is also applicable to non-metallic materials such as glass, concrete, etc. and embodies the concept that corrosion is always deleterious. However, the restriction of the definition to undesirable chemical reactions of a metal results in anomalies which will become apparent from a consideration of the following examples. [Pg.5]

In order to make this system more concrete, let us employ the Keilson-Storer model for definition of its kernel... [Pg.200]

Prototypical application examples. To provide a more concrete notion of the type of systems where our approaches are expected to be particularly helpful and useful, we conclude this section with a sample of prototypical examples of what the performance metric, y, in the problem statement (2) may represent, together with a definition of the corresponding systems ... [Pg.104]

Construct validation suggests that classification is central to and inseparable from theory. Classification of a disorder forms a representation of the theoretical construct that is needed for the basis of elaboration and testing of the theory. A classification system like the DSM provides a means of translating or operationalizing abstract theoretical ideas into more concrete (often behavioral) definitions. Testing the theory (classification system) rests on tests of its internal and external validity. These tests inform us about the adequacy of both the classification system and the theory. It is conceivabe that theory and classification evolve together over time. Theory creates an initial classification scheme that is evaluated and, when refined, informs us about theory. [Pg.7]

So a virtual package is a set of ideas that is represented in some part of your concrete package (see Figure 7.8). And to virtually import means to write the definitions into your own model because they were never formally defined in the package you import. But at least you have documented the set of things you assume. We can also talk about an informal import, in which some other document is referred to in an ad hoc way. [Pg.322]

It might have been better to have put the standards into concrete packages and thereby clarify which definitions were the client s own and which were imported. Also, should the telecomm standards organizations ever get around to writing UML packages with precise models, it would become easier all around to adopt them. [Pg.322]

Use concrete examples with familiar notations, while still enforcing strict rules about terminology and definitions, to review and interpret formal models for customers who may not want to see models. Strictly separate external and internal views. [Pg.634]

There are some scientists and philosophers who still claim that a model by definition "furnishes a concrete image" and "does not constitute a theory." 10 But if the model is the mathematical description, then the question of whether the model is the theory appears to become moot, since most people accept the view that rigorous mathematical deduction constitutes theory. For others, like Hesse and Kuhn, even if the model is a concrete image leading to the mathematical description, it still has explanatory or theoretical meaning, for, as Kuhn put it, "it is to Bohr s model, not to nature, that the various terms of the Schrodinger equation refer." 11 Indeed, as is especially clear from a consideration of mathematical models in social science, where social forces are modeled by functional relations or sets of mathematical entities, the mathematical model turns out to be so much simpler than the original that one immediately sees the gap between a "best theory" and the "real world." 12... [Pg.93]

The dividing line between hybrid materials and associated materials is rather fuzzy. This definition does not regard as hybrids, for example, those polymers joined after their manufacture onto structures of metal or concrete. On the other hand, overmoulding on structural and functional inserts is regarded as hybrid. [Pg.19]

It is difficult to prepare a definitive synopsis of the effect that the various classes of admixtures will have on the volume deformations of concrete because of the conflicting results between workers and different types of test methods used, but the points given below should enable some guidelines to be set. [Pg.109]

The loss function, which is the concrete form of Taguchi s definition of quality The quality of a product is the loss caused by the product to society from the time the product is shipped . [Pg.151]

The preceding definition of a group seems rather abstract and exceedingly general and in order to bring things down to earth, we give in this section some concrete examples. [Pg.35]

The phenomenon of catalysis is a subject of chemical kinetics, as follows from Ostwald s definition of catalysis. Therefore, the accumulation of data on the kinetics of concrete catalytic reactions favors the progress of the theory of catalysis. [Pg.173]
