Open-end drain hubs should be located at all tanks, towers, exchangers and associated equipment for fast drainage. Large drains at towers or tanks may be more conveniently handled by an acid-proof concrete or acid-brick-lined sewer box rather than an open-end drain hub. [Pg.305]

The design of the stack shall consider the possibility that moisture containing acidic constituents may condense in the stack. Corrosion resistant stainless steel or carbon steel with an internal lining should be considered for stack construction. Insulation may be required to prevent condensation. Stacks made of reinforced concrete should be provided with an inner coating of acid-proof paint or another suitable liner. Condensate that may collect at the foot of the stack shall be drained into a collection tank since it may contain radioactive material. Stacks may be equipped with manholes, gas sampling probes, ladders and platforms. [Pg.37]

Lead is relatively easily corroded where acetic acid fumes are present and under such conditions it either should not be used or should be efficiently protected. Generally, any contact between lead and organic material containing or developing acids will cause corrosion for instance, unseasoned wood may be detrimental. Trouble from this cause may be prevented by using well-seasoned timber, by maintaining dry conditions, or by separating the lead from the timber by bitumen felt or paint. Lead is also subject to attack by lime and particularly by Portland cement, mortar and concrete, but can be protected by a heavy coat of bitumen. A lead damp-proof course laid without protection in the mortar joint of a brick wall may become severely corroded, especially where the brickwork is in an exposed condition and is excessively damp. [Pg.51]

Over the millennia, concrete prepared by the Romans using lime, pozzolana and aggregates has survived the elements, giving proof of its durability. Prestigious concrete works have been handed down to us buildings such as the Pantheon in Rome, whose current structure was completed in 125 A. D. and also structures in marine environments have survived for over two thousand years. This provides a clear demonstration that concrete can be as durable as natural stone, provided that specific causes of degradation, such as acids or sulphates, freeze-thaw cycles, or reactive aggregates, are not present. [Pg.397]
