The converted digital signal is subsequently handled in the PC by data acquisition and analysis software. There are a wide range of commercial programs available for the task, far too many even to try to list them here, and users often write their own problem-oriented codes. The only comment that we would like to make here is that computer-aided data acquisition makes accumulation over long periods of time much easier and averaging and noise-reduction routines can be used to improve on the signal quality. 

Data acquisition is actually a scanning process that converts the analog gel image into a digital image with the aid of computer-based techniques. 

It has been a long way from the early pulse radiolysis experiments where pictures were taken from the oscilloscope screen, via the first application of a computer to record experimental curves, to today s computer-aided kinetic experiments. Such a computer-aided experiment should feature easy performance, precision in calculating data, and, most importantly, should eliminate human error. However, a certain standard in data acquisition hardware is also required, such as depicted in Fig. 5 for the simultaneous recording of two channels. The hardware for processing the electrical signals is the same for both channels allowing various detectors, such as photomultipliers, semiconductor photodiodes, or circuits for detecting conductometric... 

The method is based on a combination of the DARC system (Description, Acquisition, Retrieval and Computer-aided design) and the PELCO (Perturbation of an Environment Limited Concentric and Ordered) procedure. Moreover, it accounts for the simultaneous representation of all the data set compounds and the population of the compounds structurally contained in them the data set compounds, which are those compounds for which a molecular property has been experimentally evaluated, generate an ordered multidimensional space that constitutes a —> hyperstructure.
