The structures of compounds containing a 1,3,2-dithiazole ring (1,3,2-dithiazolidines, 1,3,2-dithiazoles, 1,3,2-dithia-zolium cations and radicals) were extensively investigated by X-ray and electron diffraction between 1980 and 1990 <1996CHEC-II(4)433>. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was found to be very effective for elucidation of the structure of 1,3,2-dioxazoles and 1,3,2-dithiazoles. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of the 1,3,2-dithiazolyl radicals gave important information on their structures.

In the first naive attempt a search for structures of compounds containing N—C—C grouping without any constraints on bond types or number of substituents at N and C atoms gave a huge amount of 7481 structures. This result prompted us to eliminate such formally enamine-like compounds as porphyrines, phthalocyanines, tetraazamacrocyclic compounds, purine and pyrimidine derivatives, as well as to formulate more precise conditions for selection of proper enamine groupings. To this end a new structural data retrieval from CSDS was performed in four stages.

The majority of the structures of compounds containing hydrogen are so distinctive in their properties that they are best discussed as a class apart (see chapter 12). These remarks, however, do not apply to the salt-like hydrides or to the hydroxides of the more electropositive metals, many of which form typically ionic structures resembling the corresponding halides in their properties.
