Food authentication is the process by which a food is verified as complying with its label description. Authenticity problems are directly associated with the labelling of a product and compositional regulations, which may differ from country to country and that have a fundamental place in determining which scientific tests are appropriate for a particular issue.

The Earth s climate depends among other parameters (see later) on the chemical composition of the atmosphere. Thus, any variation in the composition raises the possibility of climatic change. First of all, the chemical composition regulates the radiation balance of the Earth-atmosphere system. However, since differences in radiation balance in various geographical regions control the atmospheric circulation, there is also a relationship between composition and dynamic processes. In this chapter we shall deal mainly with the effects of compositional variations on the radiation balance. Moreover, the significance of so-called feedback mechanisms will also be stressed.

Fortunately the remedy is simple. The dynamic element in the heat-input loop, g (t), should be a lag, adjusted to favor bottoms-composition regulation the dynamic element in the distillate loop, gD(t), must also be a lag, adjusted for distillate-composition control after the other is set. Compositional aspects that are regulated include a label statement within 1.5% for table wine (for dessert wines, 1.0%) of the wine s alcohol content. Eor tax identity reasons, alcohol of 7—14% is required for table wines and 17—21% for dessert and appetizer wines. Eederal excise tax rates are 0.28/L for table wines, 0.41/L for wines 14—21% alcohol, and 0.83/L for those (rare) >21-24%. Coolers made with wine become taxable at 0.5% and are taxed as table wine above 7% alcohol. Sparkling wine is taxed at 0.90/L and carbonated at 0.87/L. The borderline to incur these taxes is CO2 above 3.92 g/L. 

Cla.ssifica.tlon, In commerce, several classifications of flavoring and compounded flavorings are Hsted according to composition to allow the user to conform to state and federal food regulations and labeling requirements, as well as to show their proper appHcation. Both suppHer and purchaser are subject to the control of the FDA, USD A, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (BATF). The latter regulates the alcohoHc content of flavors and the tax drawbacks on alcohol, ie, return of a portion of the tax paid on ethyl alcohol used in flavoring. 

Flammability. Plastic foams are organic ia aature and, therefore, are combustible. They vary ia their respoase to small sources of ignitioa because of composition and/or additives (255). AH plastic foams should be handled, transported, and used according to manufacturers recommendations as weU as appHcable local and national codes and regulations. 

Gasoline composition may also be regulated in Europe. A tripartite initiative is being carried out among the European Commission, the oil industry, and the automotive industry. Based on an analysis of the required improvements in air quaUty, new regulations are to be written that control vehicle emissions and fuel composition into the twenty-first century. 

NaturaHy occurring and synthetic estrogens and androgens have been extensively and safely used to improve efficiency and carcass composition ia growing beef catde in the United States since the early 1950s. Several anaboHc steroid implants have been approved for use in beef catde in the United States, but only one, zeranol [55331-29-8] is approved for use in lambs. Anabolic steroids are not used for growth regulation in swine or poultry (see Steroids). 

Hair Coloring Regulation Issues. In the United States the classification of color additives is complex. Under the Federal Food, Dmg and Cosmetic Act, all cosmetic colors must be the subject of an approved color additive petition to the Food and Dmg Administration there is an exception for coal-tar colorants used to color hair. Based on the composition of these colorants, FDA can require a certification on each manufactured batch of colorant to assure conformance with the approved specifications. In the early 1990s FDA has required certification only for synthetically derived coal-tar type colors. Many of the approved color additives, both certified and noncertified, are restricted ia their potential use. These restrictions can be found ia the color additive regulations ia the Code of Federal Regulations at 21 CFR 73 and 74. 

Changes in fluid compositions include the reduction and removal of zinc from hydrauHc fluids. Zinc-free antiwear hydrauHc fluids, which may be ashless and free of phenol, were developed to meet wastewater treatment regulations for industrial sites by reducing the discharge of heavy metals and phenol into waterways. 

Polymers and Coatings Advances ia polymer chemistry have resulted ia many successful medical devices, including diagnostic assays (26). Polymers (qv), which can be manufactured ia a wide range of compositions, ate used to enhance speed, sensitivity, and versatiUty of both biosensors and dry chemistry systems to measure vital analytes. Their properties can be regulated by composition variations and modifications. Furthermore, polymers can be configured iato simple to complex shapes.
