A study on the nanocomposite is important since it can affect the structural characteristics of a composite when it is used as a matrix of the laminates or the reinforcement of a foam core. It has been reported that the characteristics of the composite structure can be improved when a nanoclay-reinforced epoxy is used as a matrix of laminates Antonio et al. [71] improved the damping coefficient and the energy dissipation characteristics of a glass-epoxy composite using nanoclay particles. Hosur et al. [72] improved the impact characteristic of a composite sandwich structure using the nanoclay infused foam. [Pg.72]

In addition to developing solid RP structures, work has been conducted on composite sandwich structures such as filament-wound plastic skins with low-density foamed core or a plastic honeycomb core to develop more efficient strength-to-weight structures. Sandwich structures using a syntactic core have been successfully tested so that failures occurred at prescribed high-hydrostatic pressures of 28 MPa (4,(XK) psi). [Pg.295]

A fascinating group of composite sandwich structures can be generated by combining brucite- or bayerite-type layers with silicate layers of the type represented in Figure 18c. In this way f of the OH ions are replaced by [0Si03/2] tetrahedra. Since the apical oxygen atoms of the perforated tetrahedron sheets have to fit to the octahedron corners of the close-packed OH layers such combinations are possible only with properly selected cations. The Si—Si distance in the tetrahedron layer is equal to the O—O distance of the hydroxide layer. [Pg.342]

In most cases, a 1 MPa pull out strength associated with a cohesive failure in the honeycomb or in the composite skins is often considered as acceptable for satellite sandwich parts (see O Fig. 45.20). With such a result, a value of 300-MPa compressive strength associated to a Young s modulus of 150 GPa delivered by the implementation of ultra high modulus carbon fiber is displayed by satellite composite sandwich structural parts designed and experimented. [Pg.1173]

Based upon a piezoelectric 1-3-composite material, air-bome ultrasonic probes for frequencies up to 2 MHz were developped. These probes are characterized by a bandwidth larger than 50 % as well as a signal-to-noise ratio higher than 100 dB. Applications are the thickness measurement of thin powder layers, the inspection of sandwich structures, the detection of surface near cracks in metals or ceramics by generation/reception of Rayleigh waves and the inspection of plates by Lamb waves. [Pg.840]

A composite material consists of flat, thin metal plates of uniform thickness glued one to another with a thin, epoxy-resin layer (also of uniform thickness) to form a multi-decker-sandwich structure. Young s modulus of the metal is Ej, that of the epoxy resin is E2 (where E2 < Ej) and the volume fraction of metal is Vj. Find the ratio of the maximum composite modulus to the minimum composite modulus in terms of Ej, E2 and V. Which value of gives the largest ratio ... [Pg.278]

The solution that has been adopted by makers of composite soundboards is to fabricate a sandwich structure where a layer of high-quality cardboard is glued between two identical layers of CFRP (Fig. 28.22). The philosophy of this design modification is to replace some CFRP by a much lighter material in those regions that contribute least to the overall stiffness of the section. [Pg.318]

In a sandwich structure, the foam is used as the core with two skins of reinforced resin sheets firmly stuck on the foam to obtain high rigidity. The sandwich composite behaves as an I-beam see Figure 6.11. [Pg.802]

The possibilities of POMs compositions and structures are virtually enormous, and the number of these molecules actually prepared and characterized continues to grow unabated. However, examination of their short electrochemical studies, which are becoming a usual part of their characterization, shows that a limited selection of representative groups of POMs is sufficient for a description of the main electrochemical behaviors of this class of chemicals. Therefore, a-Keggin- and Dawson-type heteropolyanions of phosphotungstate, silicotungstate, phosphomolybdate, and silicomolybdate mixed addenda heteropolyanions, and transition-metal substituted heteropolyanions including sandwich-type derivatives were selected for the present article. [Pg.615]

Cyclopentadienyl complexes of Ge, Sn, and Pb exist in a wide variety of composition and structure, such as half-sandwiches CpM and CpMX, bent and parallel sandwiches Cp2M, and polymeric (Cp2M)x. [Pg.549]

Compositions of HTSC and ultrathin layers of dyes also exhibit interesting properties [434]. The potentiality of electrosynthesis for fabrication of such structures with specific optical transitions is excellent, particularly as a result of experience gained in studies and applications of the electrochromism phenomenon [435] such as forming films of poorly soluble cyanide complexes [436-441]. These compounds provide the opportunity to carry out electrochemical fabrication of linked and sandwich structures. The region of potential during deposition corresponds to the stability regions of HTSC surfaces. [Pg.98]

As typical examples, formation of ultrathin sandwich-structured films can be demonstrated in the multicomponent systems Ag(M/)/Pb, and Aa(fik )/Ag, Tl. The first system offers the possibility to form ultrathin sandwich films consisting of two monolayers with different composition of Pb and Tl depending on the polarization routine, as shown in Fig. 6.18. The first monolayer may contain either only Pb adatoms (Fig. 6.18a) or both Pb and Tl adatoms (PbjrTly with 0.5 z < 1, x -i- y = 1,... [Pg.289]

Studies of the interaction of lanthanide cations with multivacant lacunary tungstates have shown that a variety of composite polyoxoanions are formed. There is currently no end in sight to the range of compositions and structures possible. Although fairly simple sandwich complexes are formed (Table 14) with A-[XW.,034]", more elaborate assemblies have been produced, especially from precursors such as B-[XniW9033]9-, or directly from the components, e.g., As033-.WC)42, and Ln3+. Table 24 lists some structurally characterized behemoths that have been shown to possess solution integrity by NMR spectroscopy. [Pg.659]
