Composite sandwich panels

Processing Facilities. The phenolic-foam-producing process is simUar to that used with rigid polyurethane foams. Production of composite sandwich panels, board-type products, pipe covers, are possible. 

For manufacturing composite sandwich panels by laminating, a coating apparatus for the adhesive (chloroprene-base and polyurethane-base adhesives are preferable) and a press is needed.

From an aerospace perspective, the work reported in [40—43] indicates important considerations for the use of composite sandwich panels in blast-resistant apphcations. Some of the important considerations are the front face sheet thickness, the equivalence of plain composite laminates, coating technology, energy absorption characteristics of the core and the delamination resistance of the composite face sheets.

CFM 56 Here both aluminium and carbon reinforced composite sandwich panel constructions are used. An aluminium bondment forms the inner structure of the acoustic panel. Perforated, Redux 119 primed skins are bonded to aluminium honeycomb, Redux 319 film adhesive having first been reticulated onto the core. The outer structure is a conventional bondment of a carbon reinforced composite skin bonded to the core. 

Rigid foams can be processed as continuous panels or by lamination between two surfacing materials (sandwich panels with a rigid polyurethane foam core). Composite sandwich panels may have particleboard or plasterboard on one surface and cement on the other. Foams can also be produced to fill cavities between metal sheets or sheets of reinforced plastics or in combination on either side. These structures are used as thermal insulation for refrigerator and freezer cabinets, refrigerated transportation vehicles, water heaters, pipes, pipe shells, tanks for gas storage or transport of liquified natural gas, and so on.
