Composites engineering is a relatively young field in which the test methods and measurement techniques are not yet fully developed. Even more important, the ideas linking the properties of composites to the interface structure are still emerging. This book not only reviews the historic and pragmatic methods for studying composites but it also presents the most recent theories and fundamental tests of interface properties. This allows the reader to find the true framework of theory to fit his/her observations. [Pg.413]

The analysis viscoelasticity performed by David Roylance [25] is a nice outline about the mechanical response of polymer materials. This author consider that viscoelastic response is often used as a probe in polymer science, since it is sensitive to the material s chemistry and microstructure [25], While not all polymers are viscoelastic to any practical extent, even fewer are linearly viscoelastic [24,25], this theory provide a usable engineering approximation for many applications in polymer and composites engineering. Even in instances requiring more elaborate treatments, the linear viscoelastic theory is a useful starting point. [Pg.54]

So far, considerable information of the gaseous exhaust pipe emission factors and some of particulate matter is available from the 1990s. More recent studies reported emission factors for PM mass, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and some metals, which improved present knowledge about composition and size distribution of particulate motor vehicle emissions, and more important which allowed the creation of emission profiles—a prerequisite for source apportionment studies with statistic methods such as chemical mass balance models. However, since fuel composition, engines and vehicle technologies evolve (Kleeman et al. 2000) data on the combined mass emission rate and chemical composition of primary particle emissions from motor vehicles need to be updated periodically. [Pg.64]

Two sets of keys open the way to understanding solidification. One is the basics of phase equilibria - liquid-vapor, liquid-liquid, and liquid-solid - of reaction equilibria, polymer gelation and vitrification, and colloidal transitions. The other is heat and mass transport processes reaction, transformation, and shrinkage kinetics and stress phenomena in polymeric systems and polymer-particulate composites. Engineering approximations... [Pg.256]
