Continuum damage mechanics-based models are now available and implemented in commercial finite element software. Damage may be regarded as the growth of microvoids or microcracks in a material (Lemaitre and Desmorat 2005). Continuum damage mechanics was introduced in the late 1950s (Kachanov 1958) and is able to predict the reduced load-bearing capacity of a material before failure.
