Boil a mixture of 5 ml. (4 g.) of acetonitrile and 75 ml. of 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution in a 200 ml. flask under a refluxwater-condenser for 30 minutes, when hydrolysis will be complete. The most common problem in the paint layers, which can have a wide variety of causes, is loss of adhesion. Upon drying of the medium, the paint layers develop shrinkage cracks. In itself, this is not a particularly worrisome phenomenon, but, if through any cause the adhesion between paint layers and ground or between ground and support is lost, the paint begins to flake. This test measures the ability of a tape to resist creep under applied load. The test is covered in ASTM D-3654 and PSTC-7. Another well-established area of mechanical finite-element analysis is in the motion of the structures of the human middle ear (Figure 9.3). Of particular interest are comparisons between the vibration pattern of the eardrum, and the mode of vibration of the middle-ear bones under normal and diseased conditions. Serious middle-ear infections and blows to the head can cause partial or complete detachment of the bones, and can restrict their motion. As the Reynolds number increases, a wake is formed behind the fluid sphere or ellipsoid [22, 45]. The formation of a wake behind a fluid particle is delayed compared to a solid sphere due to the internal circulation of the gas. The recirculating wake may be completely detached from the fluid sphere. A secondary internal vortex will then not be formed. For smaller particle Reynolds numbers the wake is symmetrical, but as the Reynolds number increases further the vortex sheet breaks down to vortex rings.
