Strategic Research, i.e. new business and technology or competency building to support or underpin the longer-term business goals. 

Many large companies find it difficult to manage these competency-building activities, and many have closed down their corporate laboratories, as discussed in Section B, 1.1.1.1. Hence, these competencies are often developed in smaller, start up companies sponsored by venture capitalists. These start up businesses then license...

The concept of core competency is important to SCM. Traditional views of roles in the supply chain are giving way to new views. Chapter 18 describes the emerging model for supply chain partnerships. The traditional and emerging models reflect the impact of both cost reduction and competence building in the evolution of supply chain partnerships. 

The IAEA safety standards also form the basis for the IAEA s safety review services, and they are used by the IAEA in support of competence building, including the development of educational curricula and training courses. 

Eastman Kodak has identified 10 core competencies and developed a process for their management and utilization within the company (29). Similarly, Eaton Corporation selected seven core technical competencies, ranked them in importance, assessed their importance vs the known state-of-the-art for the industry, and developed action plans to extend the life of each (30). Eaton subsequently found the company could bring to market products designed with proven building blocks, thus minimizing risk and the need for additional capital equipment. In addition, the competencies were found to be reservoirs of proprietary advantage that had not previously been put to work. 

Cost rules out almost all alternative materials for long-distance pipe lines it is much cheaper to build and protect a mild steel pipe than to use stainless steel instead - even though no protection is then needed. The only competing material is a polymer, which is completely immune to wet corrosion of this kind. City gas mains are now being replaced by polymeric ones but for large diameter transmission lines, the mechanical strength of steel makes it the preferred choice.

Chlorofluorocarbon-blown foam blocks are used to insulate the walls and roofs of some buildings, thus reducing heat losses and helping to conserve fossil fuels. In this area, polyurethane foam competes with polystyrene foam, which until recently was blown with dichlorodifluoromethane (CFC 12) but is now blown with a mixture of chlorodifluoromethane (HCFC 22) and 1 -chloro-l,l-difluoroethane (HCFC 142b). 

In the world today there is there is a clear trend in almost every market sector for companies and organizations to focus their activities on enhancing core-competencies and build national or global market brands to advance their respective market leadership positions. As a result, many noncore activities are often subcontracted to a service company rather than being undertaken by the organization s own employees. 

During the preliminary work one should remain alert for signs of unexpected complications. For example, does the reaction proceed to completion Do competing reactions occur Is there any indication of an intermediate being formed Does the product build up more slowly than the reactant disappears Early recognition of these and similar features leads to more effective work.

The increase of stability named above is made possible by specific interactions with the solvent as well as complex formations with a suitable acceptor 112). Especially suitable acceptors are Lewis acids. These acids have a double function during cationic polymerizations in an environment which is not entirely water-free. They react with the remaining water to build a complex acid, which due to its increased acidity can form the important first monomer cation by protonation of the monomer. The Lewis acids stabilize the strong nucleophilic anion OH by forming the complex anion (MtXn(OH))- so that the chain propagation dominates rather than the chain termination. 

Several different companies have greened various steps of the process. In VNB production by-products come from competing Diels-Alder reactions and polymerization, largely of cyclopentadiene. The reaction is usually carried out in a continuous tube reactor, but this results in fouling, due to polymerization, at the front end, where the dicyclopentadiene is cracked to cyclopentadiene at temperatures over 175 °C. Whilst fouling does not have a very significant effect on yield, over time it builds up.
