This chapter includes an overview of the various entities that influence change in the nursing curriculum. Several innovative educational programs for disaster nursing are presented and sources for emergency preparedness competencies are reviewed. The importance of competency-based educational initiatives is emphasized.

Coordination may be established, where appropriate, between the DRA and the country s educational institutions, to provide the number and types of pharmaceutical competency which are needed. The aim is not merely to increase the number of professionals, but also to develop skills through short training courses. A coherent, module-based educational package may be developed by collaboration between countries. The individual modules may be housed in institutions with the relevant expertise. The DRA may then choose where to send its personnel for the training they most require. 

Apart from these potential problems, there is huge potential by applying supply chain methods and processes to increase competitiveness and decrease supply chain cost. The skills and competencies to realize (the vision of) supply chain management are not widely understood or readily available. Therefore focused education and training is required based on the industry s specific requirements. 

Education and training programs should be established for the project team and the end users. Education is based on presenting principles while training is based on practical hands-on tutorials. Course modules must be documented and their content approved and delivered by authorized trainers. Staff training records, including those for contractors, should be maintained to track attendance on courses. The use of competency questionnaires to verify learning should be considered. Mere attendance does not necessarily imply that an individual has understood and taken on board course material. 

In many ways, the current attention given to ethnopsychopharmacology has not only clinical relevance but also educational relevance. At present, there is a focus on evidence-based medicine and the development of core competencies. Research efforts in the field of ethnopsychopharmacology will be useful in this respect. 

One approach to education and training in the industry is what is called competency-based training . A competency is a skill, knowledge or behavior required to undertake effectively the tasks and responsibilities for which an individual is responsible. 

In order to develop curricula in vocahonal educahon that will lead to students learning to be able to do, the notion of competency has been introduced. In competency-based training (CBT) stakeholders articulate standards of behaviour or competencies, for particular professions and occupahons. CBT attempts to connect education and trairhng with the responsible achons that parhcular occupations involve. 

A complete assessment of craft training needs will be accomplished to identify priority areas for skiU development that is competency based, to provide demonstrated technical capabilities for each craft skill. The successful maintenance operations will develop an ongoing program for craft skill development. Continuous maintenance education, based on modern technical learning systems, wUl be viewed as a sound investment and an important part of continuous maintenance improvement. 

However, international issues are increasingly seen as integrally related to domestic diversity issues they are being viewed as another important area of diversity in which differences based on power and privilege affect opportunities and outcomes. Over the past decade, the American Council on Education (ACE) has sponsored several initiatives to address the historical divide between multicultural education and internationalization and to foster an exploration of common goals and opportunities, with the ultimate aim of graduating students who are culturally competent citizens of the world (see Olson et al., 2007). 

With this Planning for the Future example set forth, this chapter will focus on describing the three competency-based outcomes categorized from the data presented in Chapter 2. Each competency, systems, sustainability and ethics, is defined based on recent theories, contextualized based on recent research, and finally synthesized based on assessment rubrics. This is done to address the above Statement of the Problem, Paradigms and pedagogy regarding the need for competency mastery in mechanical engineering education need to be created and/or enriched so that the DNA double helix model of content and competency development can be enacted widely. With that Statement of the Problem in mind, the first competency, systems competency, is presented next.
