The relevance of photonics technology is best measured by its omnipresence. Semiconductor lasers, for example, are found in compact disk players, CD-ROM drives, and bar code scaimers, as well as in data communication systems such as telephone systems. Compound semiconductor-based LEDs utilized in multicolor displays, automobile indicators, and most recendy in traffic lights represent an even bigger market, with approximately 1 biUion in aimual sales. The trend to faster and smaller systems with lower power requirements and lower loss has led toward the development of optical communication and computing systems and thus rapid technological advancement in photonics systems is expected for the future. In this section, compound semiconductor photonics technology is reviewed with a focus on three primary photonic devices LEDs, laser diodes, and detectors. Overviews of other important compound semiconductor-based photonic devices can be found in References 75—78. [Pg.376]

A book edited by Levinson (1981) treated grain-boundary phenomena in electroceramics in depth, including the band theory required to explain the effects. It includes a splendid overview of such phenomena in general by W.D. Kingery, whom we have already met in Chapter I, as well as an overview of varistor developments by the originator, Matsuoka. The book marks a major shift in concern by the community of ceramic researchers, away from topics like porcelain (which is discussed in Chapter 9) Kingery played a major role in bringing this about. [Pg.273]

Polymer alloys are generally named polymer blends within the polymer community. In a recent overview of such blends, Robeson (1994) points out that the primary reason for the surge of academic and industrial interest in polymer blends is directly related to their potential for meeting end-use requirements . He points out that, in general, miscible polymer pairs confer better properties, mechanical ones in particular, than do phase-separated pairs. For instance, the first commercial... [Pg.326]

Consider supplementing these relatively static media with in-person presentations—especially as you undertake facility-specific communications. In some companies, it may be feasible to develop a core presentation that a number of PSM advocates— the PSM team, for example—can use to provide an overview and introduction to the PSM system. This helps bring your company s PSM system out of the ivory tower (or research lab) and into the field in addition, it helps encourage dialogue with participants— present and future. [Pg.167]

This overview communicates two important messages. Changing only one piece of the puzzle is not enough the curriculum needs to be changed in all three substractures simultaneously in order to coimect to daily-life experiences and to socio-... [Pg.46]

An overview of the use of hardwood and softwood is given in Figure 8.1 (B. Holmbom, 2009, private communication). As the schematic picture reveals, many possibilities exist for the use of wood - and biomass in general - as a source of chemicals. [Pg.164]

In the approaches to data standards, the authors make no apology for using the OMG s life science research group as a structured approach to building new data standards (as both authors have a wealth of experience in bringing standards to the market via this organization [22, 23]). As only a handful of readers will be conversant with the OMG, here is a brief overview on how the OMG works to deliver standards to the life science community. [Pg.177]

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the authors for their valuable contribution and to the members of the Organizing Committee for sparing their valuable time and efforts to cary out the review process so successfiilly. We hope that this Proceedings may serve as noticeable references for the scientific and industrial communities in the years to come, contribute to make an overview of new developments and application in chemical reaction engineering, and allow chemical reaction engineering to make its full contribution to further advancement of respective coimtries in the Asia-Pacific region and other parts of the world. [Pg.922]

Hybrid OpenMP/MPI parallelization is used to compute Hv. The multithreaded OpenMP library is used for parallelization within each node, while MPI is used for communication between nodes. The subroutine fipsi that computes Hv contains two arrays of the same size the results of the portion of the calculation local to a node are stored in hps local, while the results of the portion of the calculation that requires communication are stored in hpsbujf. On each node, a dedicated (master) OpenMP thread performs all the communication, while other threads perform local parts of the work. In general, one uses as many threads as there are processors on a given node. The following scheme presents an overview of the execution of subroutine, hpsi ... [Pg.31]

In addition, there are the highly appreciated review journals, which publish overviews of the status of certain topics of interest in the field. Advances in Catalysis, Catalysis Reviews Science Engineering and Catalysis, Specialist Periodical Reports publish the most exhaustive reviews. CaTTech is a colorful magazine that publishes shorter reviews along with news from the catalysis community. Also the News Brief section of Applied Catalysis fulfills this important role. [Pg.20]

The impetus for this volume came from the symposium, and many of the presentations from that symposium are represented here as chapters or parts of chapters. To broaden the scope of this volume, other individuals were invited to contribute chapters relating to their own topic of interest. Our chief objective is to provide, for chemists, materials scien-tists/technologists, and the science and engineering community in general, an overview of this emerging new subdiscipline of chemistry. [Pg.14]

Schmeinck, W. (1994), Overview of the German health insurance system , in E. Mossialos (ed.), Cost Containment, Pricing and Financing of Pharmaceuticals in the European Community the Policy-makers View, London London School of Economics and Pharmetrica, pp. 161-6. [Pg.185]

The identification of unknown chemical compounds isolated in inert gas matrices is nowadays facilitated by comparison of the measured IR spectra with those computed at reliable levels of ab initio or density functional theory (DFT). Furthermore, the observed reactivity of matrix isolated species can in some instances be explained with the help of computed reaction energies and barriers for intramolecular rearrangements. Hence, electronic structure methods developed into a useful tool for the matrix isolation community. In this chapter, we will give an overview of the various theoretical methods and their limitations when employed in carbene chemistry. For a more detailed qualitative description of the merits and drawbacks of commonly used electronic structure methods, especially for open-shell systems, the reader is referred to the introductory guide of Bally and Borden.29... [Pg.162]

It is clear that a broad mass market is not expected until after 2010 (Gummert and Suttor, 2006). But there are already a number of pilot and demonstration systems installed worldwide. It is very difficult to obtain a complete overview of installations because, on the one hand, the data are published by different players, such as utilities, manufacturers or users for their own fuel cells and, on the other hand, if an installation does not work, no data are published or sometimes the system is shut down. Nevertheless, Fuel Cells 2000 have set up a fuel cell database for stationary applications. Most entries are from the USA, but it should be pointed out that Japan installed 480 stationary plants in 2005 alone (Fuel Cell Development Information Centre, personal communication, 2006). [Pg.364]
