A feature of biosensors that should be more fully appreciated by the counterterrorism community is their potential for dual use. Not only will commercial production be more sustainable if there is also a civilian application that produces a steady market demand, but users will have more confidence in a system that becomes thoroughly validated in a more predictable application. If the civilian application is one that also employs potential first responders, such as emergency room staff, veterinarians, or water treatment technicians, such individuals will more fully appreciate the value and limits of the technology. [Pg.452]

One extremely important consideration was whether BZ effects could be reversed. In small laboratories the hnes of control are simple and straightforward often the manager and lab technician may be the same person. R. Byron Bird of Wisconsin has written wisely of the Plusses and Minuses of the enormous pressure to get grants and how it has changed the university from a community of scholars to a collection of (admittedly superb) technicians, but with minimal interest outside their own departments. His essay appeared as an article entitled Restore the right priorities. Chem. Eng. Prog. 92, 80-83 (19%). [Pg.102]

A common example of a service in a community pharmacy is the filling of a prescription that is not compounded. In this case, a pharmacist, with the assistance of technicians and clerks, is adding value to the product that was made by a pharmaceutical company. The pharmacist is packaging the exact amount needed by the patient, adding information that will help the patient to take it appropriately, and billing the patients insurance company for the cost of the prescription. Pharmacists may add additional value to this product, and these value-added services illustrate the similarities to product creation. [Pg.65]

The behavior-anchored rating scale (BARS) method of performance appraisal is designed more specifically to assess behaviors necessary for successful performance. Most BARS methods use the term job dimension to mean those broad categories of duties and responsibilities that make up a job, requiring development of unique scales for each dimension. Managers often develop BARS in collaboration with employees well versed in the job. An example of how a BARS may look for a community pharmacy technician in dealing with customers is illustrated in Table 10-4. The BARS system lends itself to providing quality feedback, particularly if supplemented with qualitative comments on how to improve. A drawback is the time and effort required to develop an effective BARS appraisal. [Pg.172]
