Medical lab technician

Doctors and medical laboratory technicians rely on the chemical reactions between a persons blood and chemicals added to their blood sample to detect, diagnose, and treat diseases. Medical lab technicians, for example, use a chemical reaction to match blood types for blood transfusions. They also use chemical reactions to test for drug levels in the blood to show how a patient is responding to treatment.

Medical or clinical lab technicians work in large hospitals or independent labs. Under the direction of a technologist, they prepare specimens, conduct tests, and operate computerized analyzers. Technicians need to pay close attention to detail, have good judgement, and be skilled in using computers. 

There are different types of medical robots. Early robots in hospitals were used to transport medical supplies and deliver drugs to doctors and nurses from the pharmacy. Engineers have significantly refined these robots. One of the newest versions, SpeciMinder, has a simple push-button control panel that allows lab technicians to select several destinations for the specimens. The SpeciMinder will calculate the most efficient route and stop at all assigned locations (see Figure 17-8). When finished, the robot wiU automatically return to its charging dock. 

Disposeible gloves and applications Disposable gloves make up the great majority of daily-use hand protection in almost any environment. Disposable hand protection is relevant for everyone from the lab technician to the law enforcement officer, from the medical assistant to the special operations soldier, janitorial worker, EMS volunteer and food service and industrial worker. 

Immediately notify another lab technician of the accident and type of material ingested. Obtain medical attention immediately.
