Communication listening

Sections 1.17 to 1.20 summarized the rules of thumb for the people part of engineering (communication, listening, interpersonal skills and team work).

Possess skill with five forms of communication—listening, speaking, writing, graphics, and mathematics and, in a related matter, imderstand the realities of cultural differences and know how to deal with them. 

If you do not listen to people, you cannot expect them to listen to you. Communication is a two-way activity. Do not make assumptions about what people know, think, or want done about risks. Take the time to find out what people are thinking. Often, people are more concerned about issues such as trust, credibility, competence, control, voluntariness, fairness, and compassion than about mortality statistics and the details of QRA. Use techniques such as interviews, focus groups, and surveys to gauge what people are thinking. 

In addition to understanding the PSM system and its implementation, in-hou e trainers need skills development training to enable tiiem to fulfill their roles effectively. Everyone has had the dismal experience of listening to speakers or teachers whose command of their subject may be excellent, but who are incapable of conveying it in a useful, much less interesting, manner. To help avoid this, be selective in recruiting in-house trainer candidates the best people for this task have confidence, enthusiasm, and an ability to communicate well. 

The first facet of communication listed above is listening. The exact t)rpe of listening a mentor engages in is usually known as (pro-) active listening or reflective listening. Experienced mentors repeatedly name this skill as the key to successful mentoring. Active listening requires mentors to be extremely sensitive and to concentrate on the mentee for sustained periods of time - not an easy task ... 

Two-way radios allow a user to contact another user or group of users instantly on the same frequency, and to transmit voice or data without the need for wires. They use half-duplex communications, or communication that can be only transmitted or received they cannot transmit and receive simultaneously. In other words, only one person may talk, while other personnel with radio(s) can only listen. To talk, the user depresses the talk button and speaks into the radio. The audio then transmits the voice wirelessly to the receiving radios. When the speaker has finished speaking and the channel has cleared, users on any of the receiving radios can transmit, either to answer the first transmission or to begin a new conversation.
