A new CEN European standard, EN 12874, was issued in 2001. It will be used by all European nations that belong to the European Union (EU) that are members of the Comite Enropeean de Normalisation (CEN), as well as other non-EU nations that are members of the CEN. It will supersede BS 7224 in England, FEB and BAM in Germany, and standards in use in other European countries. This is a very comprehensive standard covering types of flame arresters not covered in US, Canadian, and other standards. It contains test procedures for the following types of flame arresters ... 

Comite des Constructeurs d Automobiles du Marche Commun represents joint industry opinion on factors such as lubricant specifications, emissions, vehicle design and safety standards. With regard to crankcase lubricants, CCMC defines sequences of engine tests, and the tests themselves are defined by CEC (Coordinating European Committee for the Development of Performance Tests for Lubricants and Engine Euels a joint body of the oil and motor industries). 

The two-phase titration method is still the most commonly used method, but due to the current concern regarding the health risks of chloroform, nowadays efforts are being devoted to develop an alternative standard method. This subject is on the agenda of the CESIO (Comite Europeen des Agents de Surface et leurs Intermediaries Organiques) Analysis Working Group.

In 1949, J. Bockris, P. Van Rysselberghe, M.
