Focused on substance abuse among girls and women, this book includes a chapter on illicit use of prescription drugs. The research reported in the volume compares the addiction and abuse of women to that of men. Although women abuse drugs less than men, the problem remains a significant one. Women tend to become addicted more quickly than men and benefit from different types of treatments. 

Samuel Danishefsky of Columbia University has also described (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2005, 127, 8298) a total synthesis of 1, starting from the pyroglutamate derivative 10. Conjugate addition followed by alkylation established the lactam framework. Intramolecular cyclization of 12 gave 13, establishing the aminated quaternary center. While many things about marijuana remain controversial, even the most liberal supporters consider its use by adolescents harmful. It is possible that the increased popularity of marijuana is cyclical, and that this drug will become less popular as new information about its effects on the body is discovered. More is known about marijuana today than was known when many parents smoked it as teens.
