Signal lights

From the basic process-containing flowsheet other engineering specialties develop their own details. For example, the instrument engineer often takes the requirements of the process and prepares a completely detailed flowsheet which defines every action of the instruments, control valves, switches, alarm horns, signal lights, etc. This is his detailed working tool. 

Signal lights are commonly used to direct attention to some immediate need. Color is relatively unimportant, although certain stereotypes exist such as red for danger. In point of fact, however, red is generally not as... 

Barium nitrate is used to produce green color in flares, pyrotechnic devices in green signal lights and in tracer bullets.

Copper chromates have been used as mordants in dying and in some pyrotechnic compns. For example a blue light rifle signal light compn developed at PicArsn(Ref 5) contained Cu(II) chromate 25, K perchlorate 65 Cu resinate 10% it burned at the rate 3.5in/min developing CP 485/sq in Refs l)Mellor 11(1931), 260 2)Ullmann 5 (1954), 588 3)Sax(l957), 5l6(Toxicity fire hazard of basic salt) 4)CondChemDict(l961), 30l(Prepn props of basic salt) 5)G.J.

Other interesting signal lights, reported by Faber,20 are as follows. 

Limit Switches and Stem Position Transmitters Travel limit switches, position switches, and valve position transmitters are devices that detect the component s relative position, when mounted on the valve, actuator, damper, louver, or other throttling element. The switches are used to operate alarms, signal lights, relays, solenoid valves, or discrete inputs into the control system. The valve position transmitter generates a 4- to 20-mA output that is proportional to the position of the valve. 

Miscellaneous Uses.—Calcium phosphide is used in marine signal lights, which are so constructed that they evolve spontaneously inflammable phosphine when thrown into water. 

Bengal, or Blue Signal light, used at Sea. 1 part tersulphioe of antimony, 2 parts sulphur, and 6 parts dry nitre. (See No. 2065.)... 

G protein-coupled receptors are a large class of transmembrane receptors. They have seven transmembrane helices. Therefore, they are called heptahelical or serpentine receptors. They bind watersoluble hormones, such as adrenaline but also peptides and accept sensory signals, light, odorants and some taste stimuli. On binding the ligand they transmit the signal to heterotrimeric, a,p,y-G proteins.
