The Fe " formed this way is mobile in the soil mantle and moves in (by diffusion) or together with (by convection) the soil water until it reaches aerobic environments where it is reoxidized and reprecipitated, often as Fe "oxides. Such processes lead to characteristic colour patterns in the soil mantle (redoximorphosis) which reflect the mobilizing/immobilizing processes (Schwertmann Fitzpatrick, 1992 Schwert-mann, 1993). The distances over which Fe " migrates range from between 10 -1 m within soil profiles to up to lO" " m in landscapes.

In finished items where the material to be examined is perhaps mounted in silver, it may not be possible to look through the material. Nonetheless, on close examination of the item with a lOx lens, it is usually possible to detect whether there are striations in the material - suggesting horn - or a lack of colour pattern in the material, which also suggests horn.

The colour of a paint is usually matched to some colour pattern. It must, at any rate, be matched to the colour of the previous batch of the same paint. If a new shade is to be matched in a paint, the procedure for matching is as follows ... 

Heal (1981) has studied sexual dimorphism in Eristalis arbustorum. The females mimic several small, dark bees (mainly mining bees) well. The males less specifically mimic yellow and black Hymenoptera. The sexual dimorphism of pattern also extends to behavior as well. Heal raises the question of whether there may also be unnoticed behavioural differences between mimetic morphs. . . with loci affecting behaviour associated with supergenes for colour pattern. ...

Transfer Printing. An intaglio process of decoration, particularly applicable to pottery-ware a single-coloured pattern is transferred directly from a printing plate or roller by means of thin paper. The colour used is generally dispersed in linseed oil soft-soap is the traditional size for the transfer paper but various synthetics have also been used (cf. lithography).

Aesthetic considerations play a leading role in a consumer s selection of a product. These will relate to both the visual appearance and touch of the fabric and its relevance to current design trends within interiors. Considerations are likely to include colour, pattern, texture, hand, drapeabUity, and the availability of coordinate products. 

As a class, the complexes of the lanthanides are both beautifully and delicately coloured. There is a symmetry in the colours of the ions in aqueous solution, a symmetry which seems to be accidental. These colours are given in Table 11.9, listed in a way which shows the colour parallel between f" and f " ions. Also shown are the colours of some organo-lanthanide compounds, which do not show anything like the same pattern, colours which support the idea that the colour pattern of the aqua ions is accidental.
