When the initial concentrations are small, fluctuation effects are not pronounced and the curve of the superposition approximation degenerates to those of the linear approximation. However, for any initial concentration no there exists distinctive time to — to(no), at which these approximations start to diverge from each other. For d = 2 parameter k slightly affects behaviour of the K = K(t) - full and broken curves 1 at long times t reveal the same slopes with the only difference in co-factors. At last, for d = 3 curves at k = 0 and k = 0.5 differ considerably and have different slopes at long t (this peculiarity of the kinetics when one of the reactants is immobile has been already stressed above). [Pg.352]

The finish on the surfaces of the calender rolls is very important they may be highly polished or matt, and these surfaces affect behaviour during processing as well as the appearance of film or sheet produced. Unless it is grossly over-lubricated the hot material will adhere to the hotter of two similar rolls forming a nip, or to the roll running faster—except that irrespective of differences in roll speed or temperature there is a preference to adhere to a matt rather than a polished surface. [Pg.171]

Heal (1981) has studied sexual dimorphism in Eristalis arbustorum. The females mimic several small, dark bees (mainly mining bees) well. The males less specifically mimic yellow and black Hymenoptera. The sexual dimorphism of pattern also extends to behavior as well. Heal raises the question of whether there may also be unnoticed behavioural differences between mimetic morphs. . . with loci affecting behaviour associated with supergenes for colour pattern. ... [Pg.273]

Brown and Noy (2000) considered several driver behaviour models in an attempt to look for variables associated with behavioural adaptation to driver support systems. One conclusion of their study was that one element that determines the degree to which humans rely on automation is the amount of trust drivers feel towards a system, which in turn depends on a system s perceived competency. One hypothesis is that in-vehicle systems that are perceived by users to be trustworthy are also those that generate behavioural adaptation. They propose that new directions in studies of behavioural adaptation should include notions as trust in automation and possible contributing psychological variables as SS and locus of control (LoC) (Brown and Noy, 2004). In follow-up studies, Rudin-Brown and Noy (2002) and Rudin-Brown (2010) proposed their qualitative model of behavioural adaptation (Figure 11.1) from which they developed hypotheses about psychological characteristics that may affect behavioural adaptation to in-vehicle intelligent transport systems (ITS). [Pg.220]

I)(. p end ing upon the parameters chosen, simulations performed using the Gay-Berne potential show behaviour typical of liquid crystaUine materials. Moreover, by modifying the potential, 111. can determine what contributions affect the liquid crystalline properties and so help to suggest what types of molecule should be made in order to attain certain properties. [Pg.243]

The state of aqueous solutions of nitric acid In strongly acidic solutions water is a weaker base than its behaviour in dilute solutions would predict, for it is almost unprotonated in concentrated nitric acid, and only partially protonated in concentrated sulphuric acid. The addition of water to nitric acid affects the equilibrium leading to the formation of the nitronium and nitrate ions ( 2.2.1). The intensity of the peak in the Raman spectrum associated with the nitronium ion decreases with the progressive addition of water, and the peak is absent from the spectrum of solutions containing more than about 5% of water a similar effect has been observed in the infra-red spectrum. ... [Pg.7]

It is known that the brain is one of the most sensitive sites of action of steroids in utero, and recently there have been suggestions that EDs may affect normal brain development and behaviour. For example, it has been alleged that in utero exposure to polychlorinated biphenyl compounds (PCBs) resulted in adverse effects on neurologic and intellectual function (memory and attention) in young children born to women who had eaten PCB contaminated fish in the USA." It has also been speculated that exposure to environmental pollutants with steroidal activity may be infinencing human sexual development and sexually controlled behavioiir." ... [Pg.7]

Many pesticides cause endocrine disruption in vertebrate and invertebrate species at concentrations that are not overtly metabolically toxic. The insect growth inhibitor diflubenzuron can affect the reproduction, development and behaviour of estuarine crustaceans at concentrations of just lOmgP (reviewed... [Pg.55]

The long-time behaviour of (,a t) may essentially differ from that of C(r), but this affects mostly the form of the spectral line at (0 0, and seemingly this is immaterial for determining the tunneling splitting [Sasetti and Weiss 1990]. [Pg.25]
