Belley, A., Keller, K., Grove, J. and Chadee, K. (1996) Interaction of LS174T human colon cancer cell mucins with Entamoeba histolytica an in vitro model for colonic disease. Gastroenterology 111, 1484—1492. [Pg.397]

Three major cell models obtained from human colon cancers have been used HT-29, and T84, and Caco-2. HT-29 is a cell line capable of secreting mucin it has been used to study the effect of mucin on drug absorption. The T84 cell line does not express biochemical differentiation markers and is not particularly useful for studying drug transport. However, the T84 ceU line does express P-glycoprotein and can be used to study the role of this efflux pump. ... [Pg.60]

The over-expression of MUCl, a human tumor-associated epithelial mucin, is correlated with the progression of breast, ovarian, and colon cancer. Based on these observations and the promising biological properties of the unimolecular pentavalent vaccine, Danishefslty s group prepared a hybrid vaccine construct containing a unimolecular pentavalent glycopeptide domain covalently linked to the MUCl peptide (Fig. 2). ° The preparation of the KLH conjugate of this construct is currently underway. [Pg.519]

A number of diseases are associated with changes in mucin expression and mucin carbohydrate structures, including inflammatory disease, ulcerative colitis, cystic fibrosis and epithelial tumors. In cancer, the expression of mucins may be up- or down-regulated, or switched to mucins that are normally expressed in other cell types [5-7]. For example, the mRNA levels for MUC2 and 3 are increased in colon cancer [8] while mRNA levels for MUCl, 2, 4 and 5 are increased in pancreatic cancer [9]. [Pg.1431]
