Carotenoids are also present in animal products such as eggs, lobsters, greyflsh, and various types of hsh. In higher plants, they occur in photosynthetic tissues and choloroplasts where their color is masked by that of the more predominant green chlorophyll. The best known are P-carotene and lycopene but others are also used as food colorants a-carotene, y-carotene, bixin, norbixin, capsanthin, lycopene, and P-apo-8 -carotenal, the ethyl ester of P-apo-8-carotenic acid. These are Upid-soluble compounds, but the chemical industry manufactures water-dispersible preparations by formulating coUoid suspensions by emulsifying the carotenoids or by dispersing them in appropriate colloids. ... 

Abstract A colloidal solution of titanium dioxide (TiO ) nanoparticles was prepared by the solvothermal method and dip-coated onto a polypropylene fabric with TMOS binder. The prepared TiO particles, colloidal solution and the coated fabrics were characterized by X-ray diffraction, SEM and TEM. The results showed that the TiO particles prepared by the solvothermal method were composed of anatase which uniformly coated the snbstrate. Photocatalysis induced bactericidal properties of coated fabrics were tested by measuring the viability of Escherichia coli. It was fonnd that solvothermally prepared TiO coatings have the ability to kill E. coli. This nniqne property of TiO makes it an ideal candidate in producing self-sterilizing protective masks and in providing bactericidal and self-cleaning properties to a variety of snrfaces. 

The hydrolysis of ferric salts is so common that the color of ferric ion, Fe(H20)g+ + , is usually masked by that of the hydroxide complexes. Ferric ion is nearly colorless it eems to have a very pale violet color, seen in crystals of ferric alum, KFe(SO )o I2H.2O, and ferric nitrate, Fe(N03)3 9H20, and in ferric solutions strongly acidified with nitric or perchloric acid. Solutions of ferric salts ordinarily have the characteristic yellow to brown color of the hydroxide coniplexe Fe(H20)50H + + and Fe(H20)4(OH)o+, or even the red-brown color of colloidal particles of hydrated ferric hydroxide. 

Common methods for the fabrication of metallic nanoparticle arrays are electron beam lithography, photolithography, laser ablation, colloidal synthesis, electrodeposition and, in recent time, nanosphere lithography for which a monodisperse nanosphere template acts as deposition mask. Colloidal properties that influence RES uptake are particle size, surface charge, surface hydrophobicity, and the adsorption of macromolecules onto the particle surface. The surface of colloidal particles can be altered to avoid RES uptake by adsorption or grafting of a hydrophilic polymer onto the surface of a particle and thereby creating an energy barrier to particle interaction (e.g., the non-ionic surfactant Tween 20 can be adsorbed).Both biological and synthetic polymers have been used for RES masking of colloidal particles, for example, albumin,immunoglobulin car-... 

Since the colloidal silicon dioxide is physically bound to the microcrystalline cellulose the general recommendations of gloves, eye protection, and a dust mask should be followed when handling silicified microcrystalline cellulose. 

Observe normal precautions appropriate to the circumstances and quantity of material handled. Eye protection and gloves are recommended. Precautions should be taken to avoid inhalation of colloidal silicon dioxide. In the absence of suitable containment facilities, a dust mask should be worn when handling small quantities of material. For larger quantities, a dust respirator is recommended.
