Collimation

Rays scattered at the sample at a scattering angle 20 also illuminate a circle of diameter p at the detector plane, where p is approximately equal to po when 20 is fairly small. The distance A between the centers of the two circles of diameter p0 and p is [Pg.67]

For the scattered rays to be resolved from the direct beam, the distance A has to be at least as large as po ( p). Thus the minimum 20 that can be resolved is given by [Pg.67]

The brilliance of SR is not constant in the entire energy domain of emission because it is determined by the combined effect of the horizontal and vertical collection angle and of the natural divergence dnat of the SR. In the IR domain [Pg.75]

The physical properties of the Selenium also offer big advantages with respect to radiation shielding and beam collimation. Within the comparison of radiation isodose areas the required area-radius for a survey of 40pSv/h result in a shut off area that is for Selenium only half the size as for iridium. Sources of similar activity and collimators of same absorbtion value (95%) have been used to obtain values as mentioned in Table 3 below. [Pg.425]

The primary source energy can be switched between 6, 9 and 11 MeV. So it is possible to penetrate and examine up to 0.6 m solid steel objects. In front of the accelerator a collimator... [Pg.492]

In traditional Fan-Beam CT the radiation emitted from the X-ray tube is collimated to a planar fan, and so most of the intensity is wasted in the collimator blades (Fig. 2a). Cone-Beam CT, where the X-rays not only diverge in the horizontal, but also in the vertical direction, allows to use nearly the whole emitted beam-profile and so makes best use of the available LINAC photon flux (Fig. 2b). So fast scanning of the samples three-dimensional structure is possible. For Cone-Beam 3D-reconstruction special algorithms, taking in consideration the vertical beam divergence of the rays, were developed. [Pg.493]

The experiment was carried out by a continuously working Nd YAG-laser fabricated by NEC. The laser has a maximum output of 1200 W and is controlled by handling facility with a linear axle. A stage index fiber optical waveguide with a diameter of d=1000 pm was used for the control of the beam. The focusing optics consist of a focusing lens (f=l 16 mm) and a collimation lens (f=70 mm). [Pg.543]

In order to prepare the system for 3D-CT, it is not enough to integrate a second detector array. Besides this special attention has to be paid to the computer hardware, the synchronisation between object movement and the data read out as well as to the collimator of the LINAC. The collimator has been built with 4 tungsten blocks which can be moved individually m order to shape different sht sizes for 2D-CT as well as different cone angles for 3D-CT or digital radiography. [Pg.586]

The transducers discussed above were designed to propagate waves in both directions normal to the direction of the fingers. It has been shown [17] that they produce a roughly collimated beam so they can be used to inspect a band of structure whose width is the transducer finger length the maximum distance away from the transducer covered by the beam is dependent on the attenuation of the wave and the signal-noise ratio, but is typically around 1-2 m in a... [Pg.717]

Optothemial spectroscopy is a bolonietric method that monitors the energy in a stream of molecules rather than in the light beam. A well collimated molecular beam is directed toward a liquid helium cooled bolometer. There will be energy... [Pg.1173]

The linear and nonlinear optical responses for this problem are defined by e, 2, e and respectively, as indicated in figure Bl.5.5. In order to detemiine the nonlinear radiation, we need to introduce appropriate pump radiation fields E(m ) and (co2)- If these pump beams are well-collimated, they will give rise to well-collimated radiation emitted tlirough the surface nonlmear response. Because the nonlinear response is present only in a thin layer, phase matching [37] considerations are unimportant and nonlinear emission will be present in both transmitted and reflected directions. [Pg.1277]

The other type of x-ray source is an electron syncluotron, which produces an extremely intense, highly polarized and, in the direction perpendicular to the plane of polarization, highly collimated beam. The energy spectrum is continuous up to a maximum that depends on the energy of the accelerated electrons, so that x-rays for diffraction experiments must either be reflected from a monochromator crystal or used in the Laue mode. Whereas diffraction instruments using vacuum tubes as the source are available in many institutions worldwide, there are syncluotron x-ray facilities only in a few major research institutions. There are syncluotron facilities in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Genuany and Japan. [Pg.1378]

Powder diffraction studies with neutrons are perfonned both at nuclear reactors and at spallation sources. In both cases a cylindrical sample is observed by multiple detectors or, in some cases, by a curved, position-sensitive detector. In a powder diffractometer at a reactor, collimators and detectors at many different 20 angles are scaimed over small angular ranges to fill in the pattern. At a spallation source, pulses of neutrons of different wavelengdis strike the sample at different times and detectors at different angles see the entire powder pattern, also at different times. These slightly displaced patterns are then time focused , either by electronic hardware or by software in the subsequent data analysis. [Pg.1382]

The construction of a typical monochromator is shown in Figure 10.12. Radiation from the source enters the monochromator through an entrance slit. The radiation is collected by a collimating mirror, which reflects a parallel beam of radiation to a diffraction grating. The diffraction grating is an optically reflecting surface with... [Pg.376]

The term Q/TOF is used to describe a type of hybrid mass spectrometer system in which a quadrupole analyzer (Q) is used in conjunction with a time-of-flight analyzer (TOP). The use of two analyzers together (hybridized) provides distinct advantages that cannot be achieved by either analyzer individually. In the Q/TOF, the quadrupole is used in one of two modes to select the ions to be examined, and the TOF analyzer measures the actual mass spectrum. Hexapole assemblies are also used to help collimate the ion beams. The hybrid orthogonal Q/TOF instrument is illustrated in Figure 23.1. [Pg.169]

A hexapole assembly of rods (poles) is built similarly to the quadrupole, but now there are three sets of opposed rods evenly spaced around a central axis. The hexapole cannot act as a mass filter by applying a DC field and is used only in its all-RF mode. It is therefore a wide band-pass filter and is used to collimate an ion beam. (Like-charged particles repel each other, and an electrically charged beam will tend to spread apart because of mutual repulsion of ions unless steps are taken to reduce the effect.)... [Pg.170]

A stream of a liquid solution can be broken up into a spray of fine drops from which, under the action of aligned nozzles (skimmers) and vacuum regions, the solvent is removed to leave a beam of solute molecules, ready for ionization. The collimation of the initial spray into a linearly directed assembly of droplets, which become clusters and then single molecules, gives rise to the term particle beam interface. [Pg.393]

Lasers are sources of highly collimated, coherent, and intense beams of light that may be obtained commercially from the ultraviolet into the far infrared. [Pg.398]

In the hybrid hexapole/TOF instrument, these ions are collimated or guided through two consecutive hexapole sections, each operating at different pressures. [Pg.403]
