We now consider the status of parallelized computer codes and algorithms for computation in quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics, and reaction dynamics. Our focus is on the migration to parallel hardware of the major production codes commonly used, both on workstations and on conventional supercomputers, within the chemistry community. [Pg.240]

Basically, two different methods arc commonly used for representing a chemical struchiive in 3D space. Both methods utilize different coordinate systems to describe the spatial arrangement of the atoms of a molecule under con.sidcration. The most common way is to choose a Cartesian coordinate system, i.e., to code the X-, y-, and z-coordinates of each atom, usually as floating point numbers, For each atom the Cartesian coordinates can be listed in a single row. giving consecutively the X-, )> , and z-valnc.s. ZINDO is an adaptation of INDO speciflcally for predicting electronic excitations. The proper acronym for ZINDO is INDO/S (spectroscopic INDO), but the ZINDO moniker is more commonly used. ZINDO has been fairly successful in modeling electronic excited states. Some of the codes incorporated in ZINDO include transition-dipole moment computation so that peak intensities as well as wave lengths can be computed.
